Resident of Castro Valley

Late Friday night, January 17, 2025, Ann Laycock Chappell, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away at the age of 81.

Ann was born on May 31, 1943, in Kingsport, Tennessee, to Mary and JC Laycock. She grew up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, with her siblings: Charles, Don, and Jane. From an early age, Ann dreamed of being adoctor.

Her determination and passion led her to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she pursued her undergraduate studies. She earned her Medical Degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1967, where she was one of only five female students in her class—a testament to her trailblazing spirit.

Ann began her medical career in Tennessee but soon felt the call to live in a more diverse and accepting community.

She moved west to California, where she completed her residency in psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco. Settling in Oakland, Ann built a thriving private practice that she maintained for over 50 years.

A pioneer in her field, Ann was dedicated to advancing psychiatry, especially in the area of Women’s Health. She received a Top Psychiatrist award from The Leading Physicians of the World organization for her work, particularly with patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

She was a passionate advocate for women’s rights, often bringing her young son, Charles, along to marches and protests. Balancing her roles as an activist, a single mother, and a successful psychiatrist, Ann made an indelible impact on her community. Her compassionate care and tireless commitment to her patients earned her widespread respect.

Ann was a member of the beloved community at Starr King Unitarian Universalist Church for 14 years and was very active on the Peace and Justice Action Team, as well as other church groups. She was a generous spirit that wanted to make the world a better place for everyone.

Ann’s legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched—both within her practice and beyond. She will be remembered for her sharp intellect, unwavering advocacy, and immense love for her family and community.

She is survived by her son, Charles, her grandchild, Manon, and many loving relatives and friends.

A celebration of Ann’s remarkable life will be held at Starr King Unitarian Universalist Church, 22577 Bayview Ave, Hayward, CA 94541 on Sunday, February 9, 2025 at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers and/or cards, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to organizations like Doctors without Borders or the Sierra Club.
