St. Francis freshman Jaden Soong turned in the best round of his life on the biggest stage Tuesday, firing a 9-under-par 62 at Poppy Hills County Club in Pebble Beach to win the individual title at the CIF State Championships.

Soong, 15, is the youngest golfer to win a CIF state championship. The Golden Knights upstart has drawn comparison’s to Tiger Woods because of what he has already accomplished at such a young age.

Soong’s round of 62 is the lowest in state finals history, surpassing Rickie Fowler’s 8-under 64 in 2006, when Fowler led Murrieta Valley to the state team title.

He certainly delivered a Woods-esque performance with back-to-back birdies on the final two holes and a score of 30 on the back nine to close out his round.

Soong finished two shots ahead of Evan Liu of Torrey Pines, who shot a 7-under 64. La Serna’s Tyler Yao tied for ninth with a 70.

“It feels amazing; it feels really good,” Soong said. “I’m very proud to be able to do this. After the ninth hole, when I made my eagle, I had a lot of momentum and confidence. I really haven’t been able to digest this, winning a state title with my personal- best round … It’s a dream come true.”

Soong missed tying the course record by one stroke. He had a chance for an eagle on No. 18 but his putt came up short. He settled for a tap-in birdie.

“I didn’t know that, I wish I did,” Soong said of potentially tying the course record of 61 set by Peter Kuest. “I would have given my eagle putt a little more juice on it. I was just trying to lag it up there. If I knew, I would have given it a little more run.”

Soong birdied the first hole, a 443-yard par-4, and birdied the third hole, a 432-yard par-4. He finished his front nine with an eagle on the 515-yard par-5 ninth hole.

He stayed hot with birdies on the 10th and 11th holes and birdied the 14th before finishing with birdies on 17 and 18.

Soong didn’t come out of nowhere. He is a well-known prodigy. He turned heads when he came close to qualifying for the U.S. Open as a 13-year-old in 2023.

Last July, before he started his freshman year at St. Francis, Soong became the youngest winner at the 125th SCGA Amateur Championships, winning by five shots as a 14-year-old. He shot a 66 in his final round at The Saticoy Club in Somis and finished with a 10-under 278 over his four rounds to win the tournament.

His accolades go on and on. There was even a viral video when he was a 6-year-old titled “This 6-Year-Old Could Be The Next Golf Phenom.”

“You hear them,” Soong said of the comparisons to other young phenoms before him, like Woods. “I have the same dreams they had, just have to keep working.”

Soong’s road to the state title was not easy. He shot a 74 at Temecula Creek at the SCGA individual and team qualifiers. He had to win two playoffs to reach the state championships.

“The journey I took to get here, I didn’t think I was going to win it,” Soong said.

“But once I finally got here, I definitely thought I had a chance. It was fun.”
