Current Stanford University women’s water polo star Jenna Flynn scored big in her Olympics debut on Saturday.

Flynn, a 5-foot-8 attacker, produced a team-high four goals, and Team USA routed Greece 15-6 to open Group B preliminary play in Saint-Denis, France.

Nine players scored for the U.S. in its victory. Seven of the team’s goals came on the power play.

Jovana Sekulic, Tara Prentice, and Maggie Steffens each scored twice for the U.S. Maddie Musselman, Rachel Fattal, Emily Ausmus, Jewel Roemer, and Kaleigh Gilchrist also scored.

American goalie Ashleigh Johnson recorded 10 saves in three-plus quarters. Amanda Longan made a save in the final quarter and closed out the win.

Team USA (18-1), coming off its only loss of the year, 10-8 to Hungary on July 9 in Berkeley, has won gold in the past three Olympics and medaled in all six Olympics since the sport was added to the Summer Games.

Flynn is not only a household name in the water polo community, but in Santa Cruz County. Her father, Joe, was a standout baseball player at Harbor High, before he continued his career at Santa Clara University.

Flynn prepped at Leland High in San Jose before committing to the Cardinal. She completed her redshirt sophomore season in the spring.

Team USA returns to competition on Monday when it faces Spain in group play at 6:35 a.m.

The Americans also play Italy on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., and France on Friday at 9:30 a.m. in preliminary play.
