A Lafayette man who was found guilty of sexually assaulting a girl between 2008 and 2013 was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison.

Michael Shawn Scott, 44, was found guilty on one count of sexual assault on a child and was acquitted on a second count of sexual assault on a child, according to court records.

According to Boulder County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Shannon Carbone, Scott received asentence of10 years and life in prison, as the sex assault charge falls under Colorado’s indeterminate sentencing law for sex offenses.

Carbone also said that after serving prison time, he will have to serve 20 years to life on parole.

“Although our prosecutors recommended a longer sentence, this prison sentence reflects the trauma that the defendant caused,” said Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty. “He betrayed the trust of the victims, the family members and our community.”

Adde Dougherty: “His actions caused real suffering and serious consequences are certainly warranted for his conduct as well as the threat he poses to others. (Scott’s) failure to accept responsibility or express remorse were aggravating factors that should be considered, especially in a case of this terrible nature.”

According to an affidavit, on Dec. 2, 2022, Lafayette police officers took a report of sexual assault on a child.

In an interview with police, a man said that his daughter had recently reported to her older sister that she was inappropriately touched by Scott, a family friend, between 2008 and 2013.

The girl was between 3 and 5 years old at the time.

The girl said the incidents happened while she was being babysat and supervised by Scott and his wife at their residence.Sometime between 2012 and 2013, a family member of the girl’s parents had spoken to them regarding Scott “having no boundaries and being very touchy,” which led to the parent’s decision to not have Scott babysit their kids any longer, according to the affidavit.

According to the affidavit, the girl said she came forward because Scott did a lot of volunteer work around a lot of children. She also told officers that she wanted to make sure nothing happened to her younger sister.
