Iga Swiatek’s bid for a record fourth consecutive French Open championship will need to go through No. 1-ranked Aryna Sabalenka after both delivered straight-set victories Tuesday to set up a showdown in the semifinals.
Swiatek defeated Elina Svitolina 6-1, 7-5 in the quarterfinals for a 26th consecutive win at Roland-Garros, where the longest unbeaten run by a woman is 29 matches by seven-time tournament champion Chris Evert.
Swiatek is trying for her fifth trophy overall on the red clay in Paris, where she has won four of the past five.
Sabalenka ousted 2024 Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen 7-6 (3), 6-3 to reach the semifinals in Paris for the second time. All three of Sabalenka’s Grand Slam titles came on hard courts — two at the Australian Open and one at the U.S. Open.
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and No. 8 seed Lorenzo Musetti advanced to a semifinal meeting.
Alcaraz dropped just five games against No. 12 Tommy Paul, whose right thigh was heavily bandaged and who wasn’t able to play his best. Musetti reached his first semifinal at the French Open and second at a Grand Slam tournament with a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over No. 15 Frances Tiafoe.
Musetti and No. 1 Jannik Sinner gave Italy two male quarterfinalists at Roland-Garros for the first time since 1973.

Loons sign Harvey to extension through 2028
Minnesota United has signed Carlos Harvey to a three-year contract extension through 2028, with a club option for 2029, the team said.
Harvey has become a versatile piece in midfield and defense for MNUFC and is expected to receive a raise over the $81,028 in guaranteed compensation he received in 2024, according to MLS Players Assocaition. Player salaries for 2025 have not yet been shared.
A member of Panama’s national team, Harvey has evenly split time at center back and central midfield for the Loons this season, totaling one assist over 927 minutes in 16 MLS games.
Harvey, 25, was acquired last year for a transfer fee of approximately $200,000 to USL Championship side Phoenix Rising. He played 1,046 minutes across 18 matches for the Loons in 2024.

Penalty kick rule updated after Champions win
The laws of soccer on taking a penalty kick were clarified after Julián Álvarez’s accidental double touch helped to eliminate Atletico Madrid from the Champions League.
The new interpretation will take effect in UEFA-organized games Wednesday when Germany plays Portugal in a Nations League semifinal in Munich, the European soccer body said.
The update published by FIFA-backed rules panel IFAB means the kind of penalty Átletico forward Álvarez had disallowed after scoring in a shootout against Real Madrid in March should now be retaken.
Álvarez slipped and kicked the ball against his standing left foot in the shootout in the Champions League round of 16.
After the looping ball beat Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for an apparent score, the goal was ruled out by a video review and Atletico ultimately lost the shootout.
The laws of soccer relating to the penalty kick and penalty shootout were seen as correctly applied in Madrid though too vaguely worded. The incident was widely judged to have been unfair as Álvarez did not deliberately slip and take the double touch to gain an advantage.

Steelers reached out to fans after Trump jersey
Pittsburgh Steelers legend Rocky Bleier called an audible when he presented President Donald Trump with a Steelers jersey with the No. 47 during a rally in western Pennsylvania last week.
Not everyone was thrilled about it. Several fans emailed the team expressing their anger at the gesture, which was not authorized directly by the team. The club responded to those who reached out, writing that the viewpoints of current and former players do not necessarily reflect the view of the organization.
SWIMMING
Pro-doping swimmers banned by aquatics body
Swimmers and officials who compete in and support a doping-fueled sports event planned in Las Vegas will be banished from the sport, the governing body World Aquatics said.
Organizers of the Enhanced Games scheduled next May promise $1 million bonuses for athletes who beat world record times over sprint distances in the pool or on the track. Weightlifting also is on the program.
A small group of past Olympic swimmers, including three-time medalist James Magnussen of Australia, are among athletes who signed up for the event that aims to push limits beyond the rules of clean sport.
“Those who enable doped sport are not welcome at World Aquatics or our events,” its president Husain al-Musallam said in a statement after the decision.
