Trey Augustine is back for another year.

The Michigan State goaltender and Detroit Red Wings draft pick will return for his junior season, first reported by College Hockey News’ Mike McMahon and confirmed by The Detroit News. The reigning Big Ten Goaltender of the Year and Mike Richter Award finalist was a pillar of the Spartans’ season.

Augustine, 20, finished last season 19-7-4 in 30 starts, posting a 2.08 goals against average and .924 save percentage.

With him leading the charge, Michigan State finished the season 26-7-4 (15-5-4 Big Ten), won the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles and clinched a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. In Augustine’s latest start — a 4-3 loss at the hands of Cornell — he let in four goals on 21 shots in a major upset.

Michigan State’s roster has already lost key pieces to professional signings in Joey Larson (New York Islanders) and Karsen Dorwart (Philadelphia Flyers) in addition to four departing seniors, including recent Washington Capitals signee David Gucciardi. But the biggest question this offseason was whether Augustine left for Detroit, likely for a year or two in the American Hockey League. Augustine answered that with his decision to come back.

Augustine will remain Michigan State’s starter, but he’ll have a new backup. Melvin Strahl, a 20-year-old Swedish goaltender and fifth-round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets, will back up Augustine after goaltender Luca Di Pasquo hit the transfer portal. Di Pasquo was 7-0-0 in seven starts in relief of Augustine last season, posting a 1.70 goals against average and .933 save percentage.
