Freshmen Dai’shaun Buie and Walzel Evans had big outings, and the Cabrillo College men’s basketball team held off Monterey Peninsula 71-61 in the teams’ Coast Conference South Division game in Aptos on Friday night.

Buie, a 6-foot-7 forward out of Salt Lake City, came off the bench and had 14 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks. Evans, a guard out of Kansas City, had 14 points, six rebounds, and five assists.

Cabrillo (10-8, 2-0), a youth-laden program that made the state tournament last season, led 40-21 at the half.

The Lobos rallied in the second half and kept within striking distance for the duration.

“The guys like to remind me how young and immature we still are,” Seahawks coach James Page said.

Max Parmigiani, a sophomore guard out of American Canyon, had 12 points, six assists, and three rebounds for the Seahawks. He made four 3-pointers.

Cabrillo reserve Johnny Gasaloga, a freshman forward out of Kearns, Utah, had 11 points and six rebounds.

Freshman Corvell Simmons scored 20 points for the Lobos (1-16, 0-1), and freshman teammate Kaden Lopes made three 3s and scored 13 points.

Cabrillo plays at Foothill (4-14, 0-2) in Los Altos Hills on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

UC Merced 75, at UC Santa Cruz 51 >> Senior guard Zino Okah had 12 points, six rebounds, and three steals in the Slugs’ loss at KP Arena in Santa Cruz on Friday.

Junior guard Andrew Ferrara-Jones had eight points and four rebounds for the Banana Slugs (10-9), who trailed 34-27 at the half and finished with just eight assists.

The Bobcats (9-5) made 16 fast-break points and finished with 40 points in the paint. They scored 27 points off of UCSC’s 20 turnovers.

Senior guard Jayson Wiltz scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Bobcats. Junior guard Cameron Brown added 16 points, four rebounds, and three steals.

UCSC plays Salisbury (12-5) in Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference action in Maryland on Jan 30 at 3 p.m.

Men’s volleyball

UCSC 3, Wisconsin Lutheran 0 >> Sophomore middle blocker Kyle Ownbey had 11 kills, three digs, and two blocks in the Banana Slugs’ 25-17, 25-18, 25-21 sweep of the Warriors at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks on Friday.

Junior outside hitter Riley Norman served five aces and made seven digs for UCSC (1-1). Middle Ethan Makishima, a graduate student, had eight kills, and sophomore setter Andrew Pak made 27 assists.

Freshman opposite Brady Pichler had 10 kills to lead the Warriors (0-2).

UCSC plays a doubleheader at Cal Lutheran on Saturday. The Banana Slugs face Calvin (0-1) of Grand Rapids, Michigan, at noon and Mt. Union (2-0) of Alliance, Ohio, at 6 p.m.

Girls soccer

Soquel 3, Notre Dame (San Jose) 1 >> Junior forward Isis Tumanson had a pair of assists, and the Knights capped their nonleague slate with a win Friday.

Senior midfielder Arden Salles scored on a pass from senior defender Ashlyn Brady, and junior forward Leah Tuttman finished off a pass from Tumanson to stake the Knights to a 2-1 lead at the half.

Caitlin Curly added an insurance goal in the second half, when she finished off a cross from Tumanson.

“I believe the team is ready to be competitive and compete in league play,” Knights coach Jose Sierra said. “It was a well-rounded win. Both defense and offense played as a team.”

Soquel (5-1-2) plays at San Lorenzo Valley in Felton to open Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Pajaro Valley 2, at Alisal 0 >> Valeria Acosta scored twice, and the Grizzlies won their Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division match Friday.

Acosta has 24 goals on the season and a school-record 69 in her career. Scarlet Gomez recorded her 14th assist for the Grizzlies (10-1-0, 3-0-0).

Goalie Denis Magallon had 10 saves for the Grizzlies’ fourth shutout.

The Trojans (4-6-0, 1-2-0) were shut out for the fourth time.

The Grizzlies host Carmel (2-3-3, 1-0-1) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

At Pacific Collegiate 2, North Salinas 0 >> Anna Walker-Edwards scored twice, and the Pumas won their PCAL Mission Division match at Depot Park in Santa Cruz on Friday.

Ayla Aslanian-Ryon assisted the first goal in the 24th minute, and Natalia Aladro-Wolf assisted the second goal in the 68th minute.

Pumas goalies Kat Buckley and Amelie Pan each played a half and made a combined three saves.

Walker-Edwards put six of her 10 shots on goal. PCS finished with 32 shots.

PCS (4-3-0, 2-0-0) plays at North Monterey County (8-2-0, 1-1-0) on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m.

Girls basketball

St. Francis 60, at Seaside 31 >> Guards Liliana Whitmeyer and Maya Calfee paced the Sharks to the win in PCAL Cypress Division action Friday.

Whitmeyer, a freshman, had game-high 16 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Sharls (10-2, 3-0). Calfee, a sophomore, had 14 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.

Junior guard Natalie Stott made three 3-pointers and finished with nine points. Sophia Madrigal, Keira Grio and Abby Bedolla all chipped in four points apiece.

St. Francis hosts Pajaro Valley (3-8, 1-1) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

At Salinas 49, Watsonville 35 >> Freshman Isabella Alvarez scored a team-high 17 points, but the Wildcatz suffered their first loss in PCAL Gabilan Division pllay on Friday.

Junior Itzury Vazquez chipped in with seven points for Watsonville (12-3, 2-1), which trailed 21-15 at the half.

The Wildcatz play at Soledad (12-3, 2-1) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Greenfield 27, at Pajaro Valley 26, OT >> Freshman guard Elizabeth Zamora scored a season-high 13 points in the Grizzlies overtime loss in PCAL Cypress Division loss Friday.

Forward Olivia Contreras scored nine points for the Grizzlies (3-8, 1-1), and guard Monique Ayala chipped in with four points.

Pajaro Valley hosts Santa Catalina (0-6, 0-1) on Monday at 5:30 p.m.

At Palma 39, PCS 19 >> The Pumas were held to their lowest point total of the season in their PCAL Cypress Division loss Friday.

PCS (4-5, 0-2) looks to rebound when it hosts Seaside (1-10, 0-2) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Boys basketball

At Menlo 65, Scotts Valley 55 >> Center Jacob Sanders 16 points and 15 rebounds, but the Falcons fell short in their nonleague road game in Atherton on Friday night.

Taylor Knox scored 13 points for the Falcons (6-8), who trailed 28-21 at the half. Will and Zach Shilling each scored 12 points.

The Falcons were 15-of-24 shooting from the free-throw line.

Senior Aidan Stull scored 17 points to lead the Knights (10-4).

Scotts Valley opens SCCAL play at Aptos (10-4) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

At Mt. Pleasant 64, Harbor 54 >> Miles Dix scored 12 points, but the Pirates coughed up their early lead and dropped their nonleague game in San Jose on Friday.

Malik Wooden scored 11 points for Harbor (4-7-1). Andres Martinez returned after missing the past four games and scored nine points.

Harbor hosts Santa Cruz (5-6) to open SCCAL play on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

North Salinas 63, at PCS 32 >> A combination of turnovers, missed shots and mixed up defensive assignments doomed the Pumas in the second half of their PCAL Cypress Division loss Friday.

PCS trailed by seven points at the half.

Garrett Koontz scored a team-high 18 points for the Pumas (2-6, 0-2), and Ian Bulfin added eight points.

PCS plays at Soledad (6-8, 2-0) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Boys soccer

MVC 1, at Pacific Grove 1 >> Junior Enzo Owens scored in the first half, and the Mustangs played to a draw in their PCAL Cypress Division match Friday.

MVC took eight corner kicks.

Junior goalie Matteo Montenegro made nine saves for the Mustangs (3-4-3, 0-1-2), who play Ceiba (1-5-0, 0-2-0) on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

At Gonzales 3, Ceiba 0 >> The Spartans were shut out in their PCAL Cypress Division match Friday.

Miguel Ibarra, Ulisses Mancillas, and Edgar Santiago scored for Gonzales (7-2-2, 3-0-0).

Ceiba (1-5-0, 0-2-0) hosts MVC (3-4-3, 0-1-2) on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
