A judge sentenced a man to 12 years Friday for his role as an accomplice in an April 2022 Hammond home invasion.

Christopher J. Jones, now 21, of Chesterton, will serve 10 years in prison, then two in Lake County’s Community Transition Program.

He pleaded guilty Sept. 6 to armed robbery, a level 3 felony.

A Chevrolet Impala seen on surveillance video was traced to Jones, who was arrested in a traffic stop. He told police the robbery happened because he believed one man there owed marijuana money, documents show.

Jones showed police a homemade YouTube rap video featuring co-defendants Terrance Sturgis and Sevin Brown. Their cases are still pending.

Deputy Prosecutor Kasey Dafoe showed the video at sentencing Friday, saying Jones was also in the video, before later conceding after another look that he was not.

The victims were still traumatized, she said, adding the case was solved by diligent police work.

A criminal affidavit shows the men entered the home in facemasks on April 8, 2022, on the 400 block of Highland Street. Two men and three kids, aged 14, 11, and 7 were home.

Brown pistol-whipped one man in the kitchen, documents show.

In the basement, the men were looking for money. Brown shot once into a wall to scare them before the men, taking a cellphone, fled.

Jones’ lawyer Eduardo Fontanez said Jones had a bright future before this, graduating high school with a 3.8 GPA and was a Jesse White Tumblers member in Illinois.

Jones apologized for his role.

How did you get “off-track,” Judge Samuel Cappas asked.

Jones didn’t know, saying partially he was an 18-year-old who misjudged the consequences.

Earlier, his father, also named Christopher Jones, said his son was “remorseful” and would be “incarcerated for a very long time.”
