The scouting report: In what’s been a growing rivalry, the Tigers and Eagles have split their four meetings since 2021.

One meetup sprung Broomfield into the 2022 Class 4A finals, where it won its first title since 1984. Their game against each other last year was part of Erie’s 4A title run.

This time, the Colorado Preps Media Poll’s 4A No. 2 Eagles come in having the better start to the year. They beat 5A Legacy, 14-13, last week to move to 4-0 on the year.

Colin Torres ran in both scores for Broomfield.

On the year for the Eagles, starting quarterback Darien Jackson has thrown for seven touchdowns. Last year’s starting QB, CT Worley, meanwhile, has run for four in his new role.

As for the Tigers, they are 2-2 to start their first year in 5A. They ended a two-game losing streak with a dominant, 42-14 win over Fort Collins in Week 4. Gavin Lusk had three rushing TDs and Donovan O’Brien caught two.

Lusk is averaging 85 yards on the ground this season with seven scores. O’Brien has caught three of new QB Ronin Ward’s six passing TDs.

Last year, Erie beat Broomfield 30-7 behind four total touchdowns from quarterback Blake Barnett, who is a freshman backup at Kansas State.

In it, Worley ran for the Eagles’ lone score as, in a span of 16 days, they lost to eventual 3A champ Holy Family and the 4A champ Tigers.

Broomfield was dropped to second in the CP Media Poll this week after spending the first of four weekly polls at 4A No. 1. Erie is unranked in 5A.
