SANTA CRUZ >> The high-traffic Fishhook loop along Highway 1 in Santa Cruz will close overnight for repairs this week, according to a release from Caltrans.
The junction will close completely from 7 p.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Thursday, preventing commuters from using the route to access Highway 17 in some areas.
A detour will be available for those looking to take southbound Highway 17. The detour will direct northbound Highway 1 travelers to take northbound Highway 17 before exiting at Pasatiempo Drive. They will then continue along to the Pasatiempo Drive onramp to southbound Highway 17.
Those traveling on southbound Highway 1 and looking to take northbound Highway 17 will have another detour.
These drivers will be directed to continue south on Highway 1 to the Morrissey Boulevard exit before being directed to the Morrissey Boulevard onramp to northbound Highway 1. That will then allow them to take the exit to northbound Highway 17.
Additionally, Caltrans reports that the Ocean Street at Plymouth Street onramp to northbound Highway 17 will also be closed.
The closure will allow crews to install a pre-cast concrete girder that will replace one that was previously struck and damaged at this location. The new girder will also provide an additional foot of vertical clearance, according to the release.
