Science Friction
Through June 28: It’s not too late to catch titles from this month’s Pride-themed Science Friction series at Denver Film’s Sie FilmCenter, which kicked off with screenings of “Cloud Atlas,” “Barbarella,” “Earth Girls Are Easy” and more queer-friendly flicks.
This weekend: the Friday, June 20-Saturday, June 21, run of “Liquid Sky,” which programmers describe as “The story of a weekend in New York’s hyperrealist, queer, neon, drug-fueled, dangerous, and dystopian 1980s … .” Screenings take place at 2510 E. Colfax Ave. in Denver. Tickets: $12-$15. See the full schedule at denverfilm.eventive.org
A Doggie Drag Show
Saturday: While some former sponsors of Pride events have grown skittish or outright fearful of supporting LGTBQ people this year, Denver’s Dairy Block, Union Station and Larimer Square have thankfully doubled down with events through June 29, including a blockwide drag show (June 28) and running food/drink specials, DJ sets, live bands, drag queen bingo and trivia, and — this weekend — a doggie-centric fashion show.
Hosted by Denver drag queen Talia Tucker, Paws with Pride: A Doggie Drag Show takes place 11 a.m.-3 p.m. outside the Terminal Bar Patio and Wynkoop Plaza on Saturday, June 21. After the fashion show prizes will be given out and attendees can visit local artisans and pet-service vendors, with specials at Terminal Bar.
The event is free, with $5 donations encouraged for Canine Partners for the Rockies. Register for the doggie drag show and learn more at denverunionstation.com/events/paws-with-pride.
Boulder Comedy Festival
Thursday-June 29: One of the state’s biggest and best comedy events returns Thursday, June 25-Sunday, June 29, in the form of the Boulder Comedy Festival. The brainchild of stand-up Zoe Rogers, it’s grown over the last five years to include dozens of diverse veterans of late-night TV and streaming channels, but also several who’ve gone on to such credits post-fest (see alums such as Wally Baram, Leslie Liao and Heather Pasternak).
Individual showcases, which feature at least a half dozen comics each, take place at Junkyard Social, Dairy Arts Center, The End Lafayette and Louisville Underground. Tickets: $32.79 per show. All shows 18 and up. bouldercomedyfestival.com
Lakewood Family Fun
Saturday: It’s time to get some fresh air and exercise at Lakewood’s Family Fun Day, which returns to Carmody Park on Saturday, June 21, with fitness-minded activities for the entire family. That includes obstacle courses, games, face painting, family fitness demos and classes, water play, and local vendors. “Make sure to bring your wheels and helmet for our scooter/bike course and finish the day off with a fun color run!” organizers added for those under 10.
The free, all-ages event takes place 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on June 21 at 2200 S. Kipling St. No reservation necessary. Call 303-987-5419 or visit lakewood.org/familyfunday for more information.
