Walk to End Alzheimer’s holds kickoff event
The community is invited to attend the Santa Cruz kickoff for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s from 5:30 to 7 p.m. July 9 at Kianti’s Pizza & Pasta Bar, 1100 Pacific Ave.

Sons & Daughters of Italy to hold barbecue
The Sons & Daughters of Italy Watsonville Lodge will be holding its annual Bob Moresco BBQ event from noon to 4 p.m. July 20 at 35 Browns Valley Road.
Come and dance to the music of the Anthony “Nino” Band, featuring Italian music that will send your heart back to the old country. There will be a raffle held, with amazing prizes. The menu features half chicken with pasta, salad, bread and butter, as well as desserts. Beverages will be available for purchase.

Nonprofit holds murder mystery play benefit
The Garfield Park Library Friends has produced murder mystery play “Final Checkout” to benefit its literacy programs. Come and see the traveling troupe of local actors, poet, and musicians. You are invited to use your powers of deduction to guess; if correct, you may win a prize!
The performances will be held at 7 p.m. July 18 at the Downtown Library Community Room (224 Church St.), 7 p.m. July 19 at Satori Arts (815 Almar Ave) and at 2 p.m. July 20 at Cabrillo College’s Aptos campus in Room 322 (right above Parking Lots A and B).
The suggested donation is $25.00. Tickets will be available at the door or can be purchased online by going to garfieldparklibraryfriends.com and using the QR code.

Road closures for 4th of July parade
Soquel Drive will be closed for the World’s Shortest Parade, July 4 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. All streets intersecting Soquel Drive from East Ledyard Way to Parade Street will be affected, including: Mesa Drive 7310 and up, View Point Road, Arden Way, East Ledyard Way, State Park Drive, Rancho Del Mar, Sunset Way, Aptos Rancho Road, Tania’s Court, Aptos Wharf Road, Spreckels Drive 275 and up, Aptos Creek Road, Village Creek Road, Nisene Meadow Court, Dragonslayer Lane, Parade Street and Soquel Drive 7701-8049.
Soquel Drive will be closed in both directions during those times and vehicles traveling South on Soquel Drive will be required to turn around and bypass the parade using Park Avenue or Porter Street in Soquel to access Highway 1. The northbound and southbound off ramps and the northbound on ramp from Highway 1 at Park Avenue will be closed for construction. SIR speaker to discuss support in times of loss
SIR welcomes educator and doula Kaysi Contreras to discuss her insights as a companion for individuals and families navigating the challenges accompanying sickness, dying and death. The monthly meeting is July 2, starting at noon, at the Elks Lodge on 150 Jewell St. Demonstrating knowledgeable and ethical commitments, Contreras works collaboratively with palliative and hospice teams to support not only the dying but also their loved ones.
An 11 a.m. optional social hour will precede the general meeting. The meeting will wrap up with a chef-prepared luncheon and speaker presentation, concluding at about 2 p.m.
SIR promotes Social Activities for Enhancing Life. Branch 20, comprised of Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley and surrounding local areas, is one of many statewide, non-affiliated nonprofits dedicated to offering men over 50 — retired or not — a variety of programs and activities designed for socializing, making new friends and enjoying the prospect of a longer life. 4th of July event at Wilder Ranch
Step back in time during the State Parks’ annual Old-Fashioned 4th of July at Wilder Ranch State Park, 1401 Coast Road, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. See history come to life by exploring 19th century house museums, watching blacksmithing and machine shop demonstrations, sampling treats baked on a Victorian wood-burning oven, and more. Enjoy live music, food for sale, crafts and games during this free event.
Parking is $10 and helps the Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks support local state parks and beaches.

World’s Shortest Parade returns July 4
On July 4, Aptos will celebrate our freedoms with the World’s Shortest Parade and a party in Aptos Village Park. This year’s parade will honor Firefighting Heroes as the Grand Marshals.
The parade begins at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Soquel Drive and State Park Drive, and ends at Parade Avenue and Soquel Drive. The Party in the Park at Aptos Village Park runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with activities for the whole family, including games, food, beverages, craft vendors and dancing to the band The Joint Chiefs. A $5 donation is suggested for the party.
