San Diego’s Sebastian Radilla and Venice’s Serena Xue won titles at the 2024 Ironman 70.3 Santa Cruz on Sunday.

Radilla, who also won at the now-discontinued Ironman 70.3 Morro Bay in May, finished in 4 hours, 1 minute and 30 seconds. He completed the 1.2-mile swim in 25:52, 56-mile bike in 2:08:20, and 13.1 mile run in 1:21:48.

Maxim Mahoney (4:01:52) took second and Ryan Lewis (4:03:11) was third. Keith Eriks (4:05:31) and Chad Bykerk (4:08:01) rounded out the top five.

Xue finished in 4:47:22. She knocked more than 6 minutes of her time in 2023, when she placed 13th in 4:53:53. This year, she completed the swim in 26:59, bike in 2:32:38, and run in 1:41:19.

Amelia Zwiener (4:48:09) took second, and Micah Gay (4:49:49) was third. Thea Zalunardo (4:54:00) and Alexandra Sborov (4:58:39) rounded out the top five.

The event featured age group qualifying slots to the 2025 VinFast Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Marbella, Spain.

Women’s soccer

Chicago 3, at UC Santa Cruz 2 >> Indira Naylor scored her third goal of the match and fifth of the season in the 79th minute to sink the host Banana Slugs on Sunday.

UCSC scored a team goal in the 17th minute to take the early lead, but Naylor scored in the 20th minute and again in the 40th minute to give the Maroons a short-lived lead. Chelyn Ackerman tied the score at 2-all with her third goal of the season in the 41st minute.

Goalie Mia Linville played a half for the Banana Slugs and gave up a pair of goals. Ainsley Gove also played a half, gave up one goal, and made five saves.

UCSC (2-1-2) plays at Pomona Pitzer (2-0-1) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Men’s soccer

UCSC 0, at Occidental 0 >> Derek Uemura received a double-yellow red card in the 17th minute, and the Banana Slugs played short-handed for the remainder of the match Sunday in Los Angeles.

Goalie Tobias Jacobson-Bell made seven saves for the Banana Slugs. Riley Nyhan made three saves for Occidental (1-1-1).

UCSC (2-0-2) plays at Pacific in Forest Grove, Oregon, on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Girls water polo

Aptos Tournament >> The Mariners lost 7-6 to Saint Francis in the Aptos Tournament championship match on Saturday.

Aptos’ Adelaide Friedley scored five goals in the tournament. Goal keeper Mary Suarez-Abraham made 21 saves on the day and scored on a full-court shot in the championship game.

Girls flag football

Aptos 33, at Harbor 6 >> Mia Parello and Ella Porter each threw two touchdown passes in the Mariners’ win Wednesday.

Senior Izzy Graff scored three touchdowns. She hauled in scoring passes of 60 and 25 yards, and scored on a 30-yard run.

Porter had a 43-yard touchdown reception, and freshman Jane Parry scored on an 8-yard pass.

The Mariners (1-1) play Santa Cruz in league play on Wednesday at Harbor High at 6 p.m. They host Watsonville on Thursday at 8 p.m.

At Hollister 12, Aptos 6 >> Senior Izzy Graff took a handoff from quarterback Mia Parello on the first play of the game and scored on a 60-yard run in the Mariners’ nonleague loss Tuesday.
