After an incredible 15-year journey marked by extraordinary growth and a profound impact on the community, Lynnette Irlmeier, executive director of Empower Yolo, and her husband, Bill Irlmeier, facilities manager, have announced their retirement effective September 2025.
What began as a five-year commitment has flourished into a legacy of compassion, transformation, and growth, and unwavering dedication to ending abuse and supporting survivors and vulnerable families.
“After many meaningful years with Empower Yolo, Bill and I have made the decision to retire so we can spend more time with our families. It’s a deeply personal choice, and while the work remains incredibly important to us, we feel this is the right time to step back and allow new leadership to carry the agency forward,” Lynnette stated.
Lynnette’s strong leadership and steadfast dedication have been instrumental in the movement to end abuse and support survivors and families in need, solidifying Empower Yolo’s role as a vital resource in the community. Over the past 15 years, the agency has not only expanded its mission but has also met the ever-changing needs of Yolo County’s most vulnerable residents.
“The agency has evolved significantly over the past 15 years. We expanded our mission to meet the changing needs of the community, added new programs, and strengthened existing ones. From expanding housing and shelter services to launching prevention and outreach initiatives, we’ve grown in both size and impact. One of the things I’ve been most proud of is our ability to pivot quickly and thoughtfully in response to emerging community needs—whether that’s through emergency food distribution, rapid rehousing efforts, or trauma-informed services,” says Lynnette.
Empower Yolo has significantly expanded its services throughout the county, and the agency has accomplished a great deal with the Irlmeiers at the helm. Reflecting on their tenure, Lynnette noted, “It’s hard to pinpoint just one, but I would say helping the agency stay mission-driven and stable through some of its most challenging moments is something I’m deeply proud of. We weathered funding cuts, adapted during the pandemic, and continued to meet the growing needs of the community. It has been incredibly rewarding to see the agency emerge from those moments stronger and more resilient, with an even greater capacity to serve.”
Lynnette is a highly respected leader at Empower Yolo and has been a force in the community, advocating for survivors, essential funding, and vital resources such as housing and prevention education. Her legacy is underscored by her commitment to fostering a culture of empathy and compassion, respect, and professionalism within the organization.
“I’ve been fortunate to work with an extraordinary team of staff and board members. Our staff brings deep compassion, resilience, and professionalism to their work every day. The board has provided steady guidance, especially during times of transition and growth. What’s been most meaningful is the shared commitment to Empower Yolo’s mission—everyone is here because they truly care about making a difference in the lives of our clients,” says Lynnette.
While Empower Yolo will undoubtedly miss the Irlmeiers’ presence, the staff and board remain committed to advancing the agency’s mission of promoting safe, healthy, and resilient communities and supporting survivors and underserved communities.
“I hope Empower Yolo continues to grow, to be bold in its vision, and to remain grounded in compassion. I believe the agency is in good hands, and I’m confident the next chapter will be one of continued strength and innovation. I hope that Empower Yolo remains a trusted place of safety and support for those who need it most in our community,” Lynnette shared.
Board Chair of Empower Yolo, Cathy Farman, praised the Irlmeiers for their invaluable contributions, stating, “Lynnette and Bill have made an immeasurable contribution to Empower Yolo’s growth, adaptability, and stability. While their energy and compassion for the clients of Empower Yolo will be missed, their legacy ensures that Empower Yolo will continue to serve Yolo County residents for decades to come. The Board of Directors stands ready to support the staff and clients, and guide the new executive director as Empower Yolo faces the ever-growing challenges to the vulnerable populations of Yolo County.”
The remarkable growth of Empower Yolo over the years serves as a testament to the dedication and leadership of the Irlmeiers. Their unwavering commitment has not only driven the agency’s success but has also made a significant positive impact on the community it serves. As Empower Yolo continues to expand its reach and influence, the foundation they’ve built will guide and inspire continued success in shaping a safe and brighter future for all.
