What else is going on
University of Minnesota Press is also celebrating its 100th birthday. The award-winning press was created by the university’s regents in July 1925 at a meeting of the Agricultural Committee that included Regent William Mayo, co-founder of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Twelve years later, UMNP became one of 22 founding members of the Association of University Presses under the leadership of the first director, Margaret Harding. More than 3,700 publications later, the press will celebrate with a video featuring voices of the press’s authors, partners, and stakeholders to be shown at centennial events with a shorter version to circulate online in spring. An exhibit titled “Local Roots, Global Reach” can be seen at the university’s Andersen Library this summer and a celebration with authors, booksellers, partners and donors will be held during the July centennial week. Stay tuned for updates.
Among books published by UMNP is Doug Wood’s “A Wild Path.” For those who have been waiting for the audio version, your wait is over. You can find it online now at Audible Books or Audiobooks, narrator by the author.
More news from the University of Minnesota: The Wangensteen Historical Library of Biology and Medicine and Digital Library Services has received a $100,000 grant to develop a way to digitize and host interactive flap books in online digital collections. Flap books are those little booklets that reveal new images when you lift the flap, and they aren’t just for kids. They have been used throughout history across disciplines like medicine, anatomy, political satire and more. There is no good way to currently to digitize these flap books, and now the University of Minnesota begins this innovation.
