WEST COVINA — The 29th annual San Gabriel Valley senior all-star baseball game was dominated by pitching on Sunday as the Blue team defeated the Red squad, 3-0, at South Hills High School.

The Blue team, which used nine pitchers in the nine-inning game, held the Red team to just three hits.

San Marino’s Tomas Bilvado, who was the Rio Hondo League player of the year, started for the Red team and struck out the side to open the game.

“That’s what I wanted to do to get the guys going,” said Bilvado, who was playing in his third all-star game in his last three years in high school and will play next season at Mt. San Antonio College. “We just had really good pitchers, and the guys had real good focus.”

Marshall’s Trevor Lain hit a home run for the Blue team in the sixth inning that gave them a 3-0 lead. Lain was named the most valuable player.

“It was an amazing experience,” Lain said. “I was waiting on a fastball and turned on it. It feels amazing to represent our community after all of the wild fires this past January.”

The first two innings saw the pitchers dominate with six combined strikeouts with Bilvado leading the way with his three strikeouts.

The Blue team’s Leo Peniche of Arcadia gave them a 2-0 lead. Maranatha’s Moe Aguuirre doubled and San Dimas’ Vaugh Coleman walked. Peniche’s two-run single scored them both.

The Red team’s Gavin Moran of Ganesha struck out two in the top of the first and South Hills’ Jo Jo Moreno had the other strikeout in the second inning. Moreno was involved in a combined no-hitter and complete-game no-hitter during the regular season for the Huskies.

The Red team came through with its first hit in the third inning with a single to center by Bonita’s Cody White.

The Red team had runners in scoring position five times, including loading the bases in the seventh inning, but failed to score.

San Marino coach JJ Franklin was also glad to be part of the season-ending all-star classic.

“I love it, and it was nice to coach a game with no stress,” he said. “I enjoyed it, and I had an idea that we had some good arms.”

Two former area coaches were inducted into the SGV Hall of Honor, which added San Dimas’ Tim Alley and John Knott, who recently won a state title with Mt. SAC and previously coached at Bonita.

“I’m amazed that I can be here, and I appreciate being recognized by the coaches that have done so much for the area,” said Alley, who was head coach at San Dimas for 11 years. “I’m humbled and honored.”

Knott, who coached his fair share of all-stars while at Bonita, was appreciative of the honor.

“I’m just super honored to be part of this event,” said Knott. “The San Gabriel Valley has a rich history in baseball with players and coaches. I’m humbled and honored to be mentioned with the people that have been a part of this event.”

The Red team nearly came back in the seventh inning. Montebello’s Roberto Barraza (hit by pitch), Damien’s Bobby Logue (hit by pitch) and South Hills’ Zack Escalera (walk) loaded the bases.

But Charter Oak and Blue pitcher Marcus Reese got the final two outs to end the threat.
