Church to hold annual barbecue
Messiah Lutheran Church, located at 801 High St., will be hosting its second Summertime BBQ & Beer Tasting Saturday, from 5 to 7 p.m. This event is free, but donations will be accepted, which will benefit the Texas flood relief.
This is a full barbecue with all the trimmings along with a beer tasting featuring five German-imported beers from Bavaria. It is also a kickoff for Oktoberfest season, which starts in September. This is an RSVP event. Seating is limited. Please call 831-423-8330 to book your reservation.

Day on the Bay benefit regatta coming
Santa Cruz Sailing Foundation is hosting the annual Day on the Bay Regatta and silent auction Aug. 3 starting at 11 a.m., to benefit the Santa Cruz Sailing Foundation and the junior sailing program for scholarships, equipment and instruction for youth 8-18.
All sailboats welcome to race, and tickets to view the regatta on the water are available as well. The regatta dinner from the galley is available for $50 per person and a no-host bar will be open 3-9 p.m. at the Santa Cruz Yacht Club, 244 4th Ave. Please sign up to join this nautical summer event at scyc.org/day-on-the-bay. Senior Center to host ‘Blues & Barbecue’ benefit
The Mid County Senior Center will be hosting a Blues & Barbecue benefit dance and concert featuring Chicago Bill and the Next Blues Band from 7-9 p.m., Friday at 829 Bay Ave. There will be a BBQ ribs meal available for purchase for $20. Beer and wine will also be available for purchase. Doors open at 5:45, dinner will be available from 6.
Cost of admission is $10. The Mid County Senior Center provides a variety of programs and activities for the local community. Ages 18 and over are welcome to participate in the dances.

Take historical walking tour of Arana Gulch
Have you ever wondered about the history of Arana Gulch? Join Dan Model, Eastside neighborhood historian, at 10 a.m. Saturday for a historical walking tour of the Arana Gulch greenbelt. Learn about everything from the first Mexican settlers to the story behind the Ghost of the Gulch.
The tour will meet at the Agnes Street entrance to the gulch and will walk on pavement and dirt trails, some of which may not be suitable for those with mobility issues. Erik’s Deli to host scholarship fundraiser
Join the San Jose State University Alumni Association Santa Cruz in supporting its scholarship program for Santa Cruz area students to attend SJSU by purchasing food and drink at Erik’s Deli, 1664 Soquel Drive, July 20. Store owner Greg Newman is a proud SJSU alum of the hospitality management program.
The Santa Cruz chapter supports local students attending the university through renewable scholarships. Seventeen students from Santa Cruz County high schools and Cabrillo College are currently funded, with five to six new awards given annually. Proceeds from fundraisers and a portion of memberships go directly to the scholarship program, which boasts over a 90% graduation rate. County Democratic committee seeking members
There are two seats open on the Santa Cruz County Democratic Central Committee in districts 1 and 3. A vote will be taken among committee members or their alternates at the July 23 General Membership meeting to fill open seats from supervisor District 1 and District 3 by appointment.
