Just in time for the dog days of summer, the Tinley Park Park District is throwing our canine friends a bone.
The park district will hold its annual Doggy Beach Paw-ty on July 13 at its Canine Campus dog park. The party is a way for dog owners to learn more about the dog park to see whether they might want to become members, said Carol Bradtke, marketing manager for the park district. And members, of course, are also welcome at the summer celebration.
This year’s event, which is free and open to everyone, will include several kiddie pools — or in this case, puppy pools — for the dogs to splash around or cool off in, or the dogs can simply frolic around in the enclosed areas at the Canine Campus.
People can also visit the bandana-decorating station to make a one-of-a-kind fashion statement for their dogs. A photo booth will be set up so people can snap a commemorative photo with their dogs, and human companions can enter raffles for a chance to win doggie gift baskets.
In previous years, a local animal rescue group has been in attendance at the Beach Paw-ty with some of the dogs up for adoption. Bradtke said they hope to have a rescue group present this year as well and are awaiting confirmation.
The Canine Campus opened in 2015, and the summer celebration has been held annually for the past few years to give local dog owners an opportunity to check out the facility first-hand and see if it’s something they and their dogs might enjoy, Bradtke said. All three sections of the dog park will be open during the event. Bradtke said two will be reserved for the Beach Paw-ty and the third will be open for regular visitors who do not want to participate in the festivities.
Bradtke said there are no restrictions on age, and big and small dogs alike are invited to play, sniff and explore.
“Some of (the smaller dogs) are pretty scrappy, and they’re out there running with the big dogs,” she said.
The Canine Campus is a 10-acre facility divided into three separate enclosures. Two enclosures are open at any given time — one for dogs weighing less than 26 pounds and one for dogs weighing more than 26 pounds — while the third is left closed to maintain the quality of the turf. The enclosures that are open versus closed are rotated regularly so grass can regrow. Non-members who want to attend the event do not have to provide proof of their dog’s vaccination records at the Paw-ty, but proof of current vaccinations is required to purchase a membership.
Tinley Park Park District staff reserve the right to ask owners of dogs that threaten or show aggression to leave the event to ensure the safety of all the animals and people in attendance.
