Saquon Barkley will become the highest-paid running back in NFL history after his record-setting season helped the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl.
The Eagles are giving Barkley a two-year contract extension worth $41.2 million with $36 million guaranteed, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The person said Barkley’s new deal includes $15 million in incentives.
Barkley ran for 2,504 yards in the regular season and playoffs, breaking Terrell Davis’ record for most yards rushing combined in one season. He had 2,005 yards in the regular season before sitting out the final game with a chance to break Eric Dickerson’s single-season mark.
Kicker McManus staying in Green Bay on a 3-year, $15.3 million deal, source says>> Kicker Brandon McManus is staying with the Green Bay Packers after agreeing to a three-year, $15.3 million contract with a $5 million signing bonus, according to a person familiar with the situation.
The former Bronco, 33, could have become an unrestricted free agent next week if he hadn’t agreed to terms. McManus stabilized the Packers’ kicking situation when he signed in October and took over for struggling rookie Brayden Narveson.
He went 20 of 21 on field goals and made all 30 of his extra-point attempts in 11 games.
Jets release wide receiver Davante Adams>> Davante Adams’ reunion with Aaron Rodgers lasted just 11 games with the New York Jets. The team released the veteran wide receiver Tuesday, ahead of the start of the NFL’s new league year next week.
The move, which was expected, will save the Jets $29.9 million in salary cap space. It follows the team’s announcement on Feb. 13 that they’re also moving on this offseason from Rodgers, Adams’ longtime teammate and friend.
Releasing Adams will cost the Jets $8.3 million in dead-cap money, according to overthecap.com.
Darnold pointed toward free agency after Vikings pass on franchise tag >> The Minnesota Vikings will likely let their starting quarterback set the NFL free agent market for a second straight offseason.
The Vikings passed on the opportunity to place the franchise tag on Sam Darnold before the league’s deadline on Tuesday, maximizing their options for bolstering the roster and potentially making the first-time Pro Bowl pick available to every team when free agency opens next week.
Sound familiar? Though some of the circumstances varied, the Vikings essentially did the same a year ago in declining to re-sign Kirk Cousins.
With the Vikings eyeing several areas for upgrades despite a 14-win season in 2024 and already developing a prized young quarterback in J.J. McCarthy, the salary cap space protected by their decision to let Darnold hit the market will go a long way toward their attempt to restock for another run at that elusive Super Bowl.
Cowboys and defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa agree on $80M, 4-year contract>> The Dallas Cowboys and defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa agreed Tuesday on an $80 million, four-year contract with $58 million guaranteed, his agent said.
The agreement came a few hours before the deadline for clubs to apply the franchise tag on one player. Odighizuwa was a consideration for the $25 million tag for defensive tackles. Agent Sam Leaf Ireifej confirmed the deal to The Associated Press. It includes a $20 million signing bonus.
Odighizuwa was a 2021 third-round pick who blossomed into one of Dallas’ best defensive linemen. He tied star pass rusher Micah Parsons for the club lead with 23 quarterback hits last season.
