The call that led police to check on an Inver Grove Heights residence, where a double murder-suicide was discovered, originated because someone was on the phone with one of the residents when they heard a bang and a fire alarm, according to a court document.

Jamie Lee Charles, 43, and her son, Willie Shaw Jr., 19, were found dead on Sunday. Charles’ son, 22-year-old Jaymison Shaw, was identified by police as the suspect. He died by suicide.

On Sunday, police responded to Charles’ residence in the 3200 block of 78th Street East near Cahill Avenue for “a welfare check on the family,” according to an affidavit in support of a search warrant filed in court this week by Inver Grove Heights police.

“All of the doors were locked and there was no answer at the home,” the affidavit said. “A person was concerned” because the night before they were on the phone with a resident when they heard the sounds.

“A welfare check the night before resulted in the house being dark and quiet,” according to the affidavit.On Sunday morning, “officers obtained keys for the residence from management and entered the town home after blood was observed on the front doorsteps. Upon entry into the residence, officers and personnel on scene located three deceased individuals,” the affidavit continued.

Law enforcement obtained a search warrant for the residence, which was processed by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and Inver Grove Heights police investigators. They took electronics, including laptops, and cellphones of both Shaw brothers and Charles.

The search warrant, which was granted, was to examine the devices. An investigator wrote he believes they “could provide a motive and/or reasoning for the death of the deceased parties.”

Police have said the investigation remains ongoing and have not released information about how the three died.

At a memorial Monday night, family members emphasized the importance of mental health. They didn’t discuss specific mental health concerns.

“I just want to make sure that everyone that’s here understands that mental health is a huge deal, and we can do better about it as a community,” said Jarid Friese, Charles’ cousin, at the memorial. “I don’t know what happened, but I’m just saying that we can do better.”

A niece of Charles’ who started a GoFundMe for funeral expenses wrote: “Our family is facing an unimaginable heartbreak after the sudden loss of three deeply loved members of our family: Jamie, Willie Jr., and Jaymison.”

Charles was a licensed practical nurse who worked for the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, according to her Facebook page.

Willie Shaw Jr. graduated from Simley High School in Inver Grove Heights in 2025, where he played basketball.

Jaymison Shaw attended Inver Grove Heights Schools from 2009 to 2020. Minnesota court records show no criminal history for him.
