A teen in Sacramento was arrested last week in connection to a shooting death of a Salinas man last year during a sideshow, authorities announced Friday.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol received multiple calls around 10:25 p.m. Nov. 9 of a person shot in Prunedale, a community in unincorporated Monterey County. The shooting broke out during a sideshow, typically an incident in which hordes of people descend on roads to watch vehicle stunts, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and the California Highway Patrol arrived to the area near Prunedale South and Blackie roads, where they found an 18-year-old suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries, said Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto during a news conference Friday in Monterey.
“He was murdered over something people thought was fun,” Nieto said during the news conference, which was streamed on social media.
The victim was identified as Adrian Puga of Salinas.
Deputies, in their investigation, developed people of interest and pinpointed a suspect in the Sacramento area, Nieto said.
The Sacramento Police Department and others helped the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office to execute a search warrant Wednesday and arrested the 17-year-old suspect, Nieto said. He was extradited Thursday to Monterey, she said.
The suspect was arrested in the 100 block of Danville Way in the Strawberry Manor neighborhood, said Officer Amber Hickey, a spokesperson with the Sacramento Police Department.
The teen faces a murder charge and is booked in juvenile hall in Monterey County, Nieto said. He is not being identified because he is a minor. The Sheriff’s Office declined to comment on a potential motive.
