Close shaves raise support

Southland students, teachers and other adults are sporting a bald new look after participating in fundraisers benefiting St. Baldrick's Foundation, committed to finding cures for childhood cancers.
Last week at Jerling Junior High School in Orland Park, students and teachers raised more than $13,000 for the cause.
Nearly 25 people from Jerling agreed to get their head shaved in the name of finding a cure, including several students, community members, parents and staff.
The top fundraiser was seventh-grader Kylie Sloan, also the only female to get her head shaved.
As the top fundraiser, Sloan helped shave Principal Kevin Brown's head and also helped some classmates give superintendent DJ Skogsberg a haircut.
The Orland Park Fire Department and Lion's Club also participated in the event.
Another ceremony last week at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago celebrated the donation of more than $143,000 to the St. Baldrick's Foundation, making Mount Carmel the highest-donating high school for the event in Chicago.
“Mount Carmel has participated in the St. Baldrick's fundraiser for the past 10 years to help raise money for children's cancer research,” said director of student activities Sean Sweany, one of 42 volunteers to have his head shaved.
“Our participation is especially meaningful as several members of the MC family have battled cancer over the last several years. There has always been a great outpouring of support from the Mount Carmel community, and we are grateful for everyone's hard work.”
Those at the event also remembered and honored Kevin Hansen, a former Mount Carmel theology teacher who lost his battle with leukemia in April 2015.
