Top-ranked Iga Swiatek fought through a tough first-round match at the U.S. Open on Tuesday, while two-time champion Naomi Osaka made an impressive return to the tournament by beating No. 10 Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-2.
Osaka, the 2018 and 2020 champion in Flushing Meadows, needed only 64 minutes to oust Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion. It was the kind of performance that was standard from Osaka when she reached No. 1 in the rankings and won four Grand Slam titles between 2018-21.
She smashed 19 winners against only five unforced errors Tuesday.
Swiatek had a more difficult time, edging Kamilla Rakhimova 6-4, 7-6 (6). The 2022 champion was one point away from being forced to a third set when Rakhimova took a 6-3 lead in the tiebreaker. But Swiatek recovered and won the next five points, finishing the match when her opponent missed a backhand.
Swiatek improved to 22-1 in first-round matches at Grand Slams, including 6-0 at the U.S. Open.
Danielle Collins’ singles career at Grand Slams ended when the No. 11 seed was upset by fellow American Caroline Dolehide 1-6, 7-5, 6-4. Collins, 30, has announced she plans to retire at the end of the season. She is still entered in doubles at Flushing Meadows.
No. 11 Stefanos Tsitsipas and No. 19 Felix Auger-Aliassime were both knocked out in the first round, while No. 7 Hubert Hurkacz and No. 25 Jack Draper were among the men’s winners.
• Dan Evans has won the longest match at the U.S. Open since tiebreakers were introduced in 1970, beating Karen Khachanov 6-7 (6), 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4 on Tuesday in 5 hours, 35 minutes.
Evans trailed 4-0 in the fifth set before running off the final six games. The final point, fittingly, was a marathon 22-shot rally, with Evans on the defensive for much of the point before hitting a hard shot to the corner that the No. 23-seeded Khachanov couldn’t get back over the net with his backhand.
The previous record was 5 hours, 26 minutes, when Stefan Edberg beat Michael Chang in a five-setter in the 1992 semifinals.
• In Monday’s late night session, Novak Djokovic — whose collection of 24 Slam titles includes last year’s in New York — defeated Radu Albot 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.
The second-seeded Djokovic, eyeing a record 25th Grand Slam title, tied Roger Federer with his 89th match win at the U.S. Open. He was competing for the first time since claiming an Olympic gold medal three weeks ago at the Paris Games, the last significant achievement that was missing from his resume.
Mitchell, Clark lead Fever over Dream; Liberty roll on
Kelsey Mitchell scored 29 points, including the clinching free throws with 5 seconds left, Caitlin Clark added 19 points and the Indiana Fever disappointed a record Atlanta crowd by holding off the Dream 84-79 on Monday night.
In the closing seconds, without a timeout, Atlanta missed two 3-pointers but grabbed two offensive rebounds before fumbling the ball away, which led to Mitchell’s clinching free throws before 17,608 at State Farm Arena.
Aliyah Boston had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Indiana (14-16). Clark had four 3-pointers giving her a season total of 85 to tie the rookie record set by Atlanta’s Rhyne Howard in 2022.
LIBERTY 84, MERCURY 70 >> Breanna Stewart scored 21 points, Courtney Vandersloot added 16 and New York used a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to pull away from Phoenix.
Jonquel Jones scored 15 points for the Liberty (27-5), who made 12 3-pointers and outscored Phoenix 14-3 at the foul line.
Brittney Griner scored 22 to lead the Mercury (16-15), but had seven of their 20 turnovers. Diana Taurasi added 10 points to her league-record total (10,528). Taurasi also moved past Lindsey Whalen (2,348) for fourth on the WBA career assists list (2,354).
MYSTICS 74, STORM 72 >> Brittney Sykes scored 20 points, including the winning free throws with 1.1 seconds left, and Washington picked up its fourth road win, handing Seattle just their fourth home loss.
Seattle’s Gabby Williams, a star on the French team that won silver in the Paris Olympics had three points in 25 minutes in her first game of the WNBA season.
