ARLINGTON, Texas >> Derius Davis ran 70 yards for a touchdown on Los Angeles’ first play, Simi Fehoko caught a 78-yard scoring pass and the Chargers beat the Dallas Cowboys 26-19 in a preseason finale Saturday.
Trey Lance ran for a touchdown and threw for a score but had five interceptions, including undrafted rookie Tre’mon Morris-Brash’s 25-yard pick-6 with Dallas trailing by a point in the fourth quarter.
It could be Lance’s last extensive action for the Cowboys.
The 2021 No. 3 overall pick by San Francisco played most of the preseason — without any turnovers before facing the Chargers — as Dallas tries to decide if Lance will be part of the club’s future.
For now, the expiring year on Lance’s rookie contract will be spent as the third QB behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. The Cowboys traded for Lance last year after he lost the battle to be Brock Purdy’s backup with the 49ers.
Panthers 31, Bills 26>> Bryce Young made Panthers coach Dave Canales’ decision easy in determining how long he was going to keep the Panthers’ starting offense on the field in their preseason finale.
All it took to reassure the coach his quarterback was ready, was watching Young cap a 12-play, 85-yard opening drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jordan Matthews in Carolina’s 31-26 win.
“Oh, it was great, right? Couldn’t have dreamt it better,” Canales said.
The Bills rested all of their starters to avoid risking further injury to an already limping team. Starting linebacker Matt Milano (torn left biceps) will miss at least two months, while receivers Curtis Samuel (turf toe) and Marquez Valdes-Scantling (neck) and backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky (knee) are listed week to week.
More injuries muddied the competition for Buffalo’s final roster spots.
Darrynton Evans scored Buffalo’s first touchdown of the preseason with an 18-yard catch, but had to leave the game with an ankle injury. Frank Gore Jr. had 101 yards rushing, including a 5-yard touchdown run, but left the game late with a knee injury.
Packers 30, Ravens 7 >> The Green Bay Packers’ kicking competition is going down to the wire.
Greg Joseph improved his chances of unseating incumbent Anders Carlson by making a 55-yard field goal and a 36-yarder and the Packers beat the Baltimore Ravens 30-7 in a preseason finale without most of the starters from either team.
Carlson made a 54-yarder in the first quarter but pushed a 32-yarder wide right in the final period.
“We’ll wait and see,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said about the kicking competition after the game.
After Carlson struggled as a rookie last season, the Packers brought in Joseph to compete with him. Joseph has played for the Cleveland Browns (2018), Tennessee Titans (2019) and Minnesota Vikings (2021-23).
Both teams rested their top players to make sure they stayed as healthy as possible for the start of the regular season. The Ravens still got some bad luck with running back Owen Wright breaking his foot and center Nick Samac also getting carted off the field.
Texans 17, Rams 15 >> Houston’s Cam Akers isn’t sure what will happen in the next few days as final roster cuts are made. But the veteran running back believes he made a good case to make the team.
“I feel good,” he said. “I feel like I showed people I’m still who I am.”
Tim Boyle threw for 142 yards and two touchdowns and Akers had 53 yards rushing to lead the Texans to a 17-15 win over Los Angeles in the preseason finale for both teams.
Akers, a former Ram, added 19 yards receiving. He had a career-best 786 yards rushing with seven touchdowns for the Rams in 2022. He’s listed as fifth on the depth chart with Joe Mixon and Dameon Pierce the only running backs who have roster spots locked up.
He made a highlight reel play Saturday when he lowered his shoulder into Jason Taylor II and knocked the safety to the ground at the end of a 23-yard run late in the first quarter.
Vikings 26, Eagles 3>> Minnesota’s Jaren Hall threw for 162 yards and two touchdowns in the first half against Philadelphia’s reserves, and the Vikings beat the Eagles 26-3 on Saturday in the preseason finale for both teams.
Hall completed 15 of 21 passes, highlighted by touchdowns of 8 yards to Trishton Jackson and 4 yards to Justin Hall.
A fifth-round pick in 2023, Hall is slated to be the Vikings’ No. 3 quarterback, behind Sam Darnold and Nick Mullens.
“I thought he did a great job,” Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said. “He was efficient. He was playing fast. He’s put a lot of work in. Something he should be proud of, for sure.”
Minnesota finished 3-0 in the preseason but suffered a big loss when rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy tore the meniscus in his right knee against the Raiders on Aug. 10. He is out for the season.
Jets 10, Giants 6 >> Israel Abanikanda had a 45-yard touchdown run in the first half and the Jets sacked Tommy DeVito eight times in a 10-6 victory over the Giants in a battle of backups in the New York teams’ preseason finale Saturday night.
Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the Jets’ projected starters watched the snoozer from the sideline, as did Daniel Jones and most of the Giants’ starters.
DeVito, slated as the No. 3 quarterback behind Jones and Drew Lock, played the entire game and struggled to get anything going. He finished 14 of 27 for 103 yards.
DeVito was often on the run — gaining 48 yards on five carries — while facing constant pressure by the Jets (3-0), who got 2 1/2 sacks from Takk McKinley and two from undrafted rookie Braiden McGregor.
The Giants (1-2) went with only one projected starter — center John Michael Schmitz — and he left in the first quarter with an ankle injury.
The only potential Jets starters who played were defensive ends Micheal Clemons and Will McDonald, backups who got extended playing time in the preseason with Haason Reddick a holdout as he seeks a new contract.
