Martin was born in Woodland, CA to Felomeno and Pascuala Fernandez. He is survived by his loving partner of 40 years Karen Gonzales, his sisters Rebecca Aalfs (Dan Aalfs) and Frances Traver (Jim Traver), stepdaughter Kari Gutierrez (Barry Criste), granddaughters Alyssa and Jessica and great granddaughter Aria, many close cousins, nephews, and nieces. He grew up in the Esparto area and graduated from Esparto High School in 1969. That same year he moved to Sacramento and went to work with Camblin Steel as an iron worker. He worked there for 56 years until his recent retirement. Martin loved his work and was respected and admired by management and his fellow union ironworkers where he was known affectionately as “Marty.”

Martin loved his family dearly and over the years always returned to the Esparto area on weekends to visit with family and friends. He was an avid golfer and bowler as well as being a die-hard Bay Area sports fan. He especially loved his annual trips to Trinity Lake and to river trips in Oregon and Idaho. Martin was also an accomplished cook specializing in Filipino and Mexican dishes.

A Mass will be held on Friday, June 6at11:00am at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Esparto, 25633 Grafton Street. Following the mass at the adjacent church hall, the family will host a lunch reception where family and friends are invited to share their stories and memories of Martin.
