OAKLAND — Police said they arrested an East Oakland resident as a suspect in a fatal weekend shooting outside a North Oakland residence.

Police said they took the man into custody about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. They did not identify him.

The gunfire, which rang out about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, killed 37-year-old Tim Conover. Authorities identified him Monday.

According to police, the shooting happened on a sidewalk in the 800 block of 41st Street, a residential area between Market and Lusk streets.

Police said Conover was outside his home on the sidewalk when the shooting happened. He died at the scene.

The shooter fled before police arrived.

In an online fundraiser, organizers wrote that the shooting came after Conover hosted “a joyous Fourth of July party for friends and neighbors.” Authorities confirmed that Conover invited the suspect to the party and then to stay overnight on the couch.

According to the fundraiser summary, Conover was engaged.

“He was an amazing man who loved Zazzi (his fianceé), his lovely children, Zyla and Zylan and all his family,” the fundraising page reads. “Tim was an example of loving without conditions. His heart was full of love and gave to all he could. He would feed you, laugh with you and send you home with a happy heart.”

The fundraiser seeks $24,000 in donations. It had raised $7,720 by 1:30 p.m. on Monday. To contribute, go to gofund.me/7108b08f.

The killing was the 38th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. A year ago at this time, police had investigated 50 homicides.
