Mac Mishler doesn’t plan to change much at Morton.

The Governors’ offensive coordinator for the past two seasons wants to keep moving ahead with what has worked.

Mishler has been named Morton’s coach, replacing Sean Kinsey, who resigned after four seasons after he took a position in the administration.

“The formula here is good,” Mishler said. “I don’t want to mess with it. I think the right culture has been in place here for a long time.”

Mishler has plenty of players to keep the winning tradition alive. Morton finished 9-2 this season, losing to Hobart in the first round of sectionals.

Returning players include JoJo Johnson, a wide receiver and defensive back who has offers from Ball State, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan; Dierre Kelly, a defensive end who has offers from Bowling Green, Toledo and Miami of Ohio; and wide receiver Marcus Hardy, who had 14 touchdowns among his 24 catches this season.

“Anytime you have players like Marcus Hardy, JoJo Johnson and Dierre Kelly back, it just makes it easier,” Mishler said.

Mishler has been an assistant for 15 seasons. He started his coaching career in Michigan and then had a stint in Wisconsin before moving to Northwest Indiana.

He coached for two seasons at Highland under Trent Grider. When Grider retired before the 2018 season, Mishler moved to Morton.

He doesn’t plan on making major changes in the coaching staff.

The Governors have had the best football program in Hammond for about 20 years, and it should get better. Clark and Gavit are scheduled to fold into Morton for the 2021-22 school year.

Mishler knows a good opportunity could unfold for him in the next few years. For now, though, he wants to concentrate on not losing momentum.

“This isn’t a rebuild at all,” he said. “We just want to keep doing what we’ve done and play consistently good football.”
