Kyler Murray’s debut with the Vikings against the Green Bay Packers was cut short on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium. He left the game midway through first quarter after taking a late hit to the head and was evaluated for a concussion before officially being ruled out.
The scene was scary to witness.
After scrambling outside of the pocket, Murray slid in an attempt to avoid contact. He initially got hit by edge rusher Lukas Van Ness before safety Javon Bullard flew in late and delivered a shot to the head.
The reaction from Murray didn’t look good as he stayed down on the field while trainers quickly tended to him.
The good news? Murray walked off under his own power and was immediately taken to the locker room.
Though it’s still unclear how long Murray will be out, if he indeed suffered a concussion, it’s highly unlikely that he will be available to play next week when the Vikings travel to play the Chicago Bears.
In his absence, Carson Wentz took over at quarterback, with J.J. McCarthy serving as his backup.
Smith active
After delaying retirement and signing with the Vikings last week, veteran safety Harrison Smith promised he wasn’t going to need very long to be ready to play. He made good on that promise on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium as he was officially active for the Vikings against the Packers.
Asked about Smith leading up to the game, head coach Kevin O’Connell wouldn’t divulge what his role was going to look like. Maybe because it’s still a work in progress to some degree as he gets acclimated.
“He’s in great shape,” O’Connell said. “He was ready to transition to football and didn’t miss a beat.”
It will more than likely take Smith at least a little bit of time to ramp up to a full workload. He did not start and was used mostly in sub packages in the early stages.
That’s fine with defensive coordinator Brian Flores, the mastermind behind it all, who couldn’t be more happy to have Smith back in the mix.
In addition to Smith, veteran edge rusher Kyle Van Noy was also actives, which was expected after he was elevated from the practice squad leading up to the game. He’s expected to need some time to ramp up to a full workload, as well, after signing with the Vikings after training camp concluded.
The inactives for the Vikings were quarterback J.J. McCarthy, running back Demond Claiborne, right tackle Caleb Tiernan, center Nick Samac, defensive tackle Elijah Williams, cornerback Zemaiah Vaughn and safety Jakobe Thomas.
Though he was technically listed as inactive, McCarthy was the emergency quarterback for the Vikings, a role he will serve in for the foreseeable future with Murray and Carson Wentz ahead of him on the depth chart.
