Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez hit for the cycle in Sunday’s 6-4 road loss against the Seattle Mariners, becoming the 10th player in Houston history to accomplish the feat.

Alvarez singled in the first inning, homered off Mariners starter Bryan Woo in the fourth, added a run-scoring triple to center field in the sixth off Taylor Saucedo and completed the cycle with a double down the right field line in the eighth against Gregory Santos.

Alvarez finished 4 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

He had the second cycle in the history of T-Mobile Park, after Miguel Tejada’s on Sept. 29, 2001 for the Oakland A’s.

Before Sunday, the most recent cycle by an Astro came on Aug. 28, 2023, by Jose Altuve against Boston.

Asked if he’d ever hit for a cycle in his baseball life, Alvarez said, “Not even in Playstation.”

“I’m very excited,” he said. “I felt a little bit of pressure there, but I knew I needed a double and when I hit the ball I said, ‘There it is.”

The triple, the sixth of Alvarez’s career, came on a fly ball to deep center field. Julio Rodríguez jumped for the ball against the wall, but dropped the catch and sprained his right ankle on the play. The ball rolled toward the infield before left fielder Dylan Moore grabbed it as Alvarez hustled into third.

“It was a confusing play,” Alvarez said. “When I hit the ball, I thought it was going to carry a little bit more, and then I saw him jump at the wall and make the catch, and then I saw him hit the wall and the ball drops and he drops. I just knew I needed to continue running there.”

Rodríguez left the game. Mariners manager Scott Servais said initial X-rays on the ankle were negative.

Luke Raley hit a three-run homer and Woo pitched 5 2/3 solid innings for the Mariners.

Woo (4-1) retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced, and allowed only two hits over his first five innings before he was pulled with two outs in the sixth. He allowed four hits and two earned runs, with no walks and five strikeouts.

Braves lose Albies, Fried to injuries

Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies fractured his left wrist late in Sunday’s 6-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals and is expected to miss about eight weeks.

Albies got hurt trying to catch a throw when Michael Siani stole second in the ninth inning. Siani slid into Albies as the infielder reached for the ball, bending back his glove hand at an awkward angle.

The three-time All-Star is hitting .255 with eight home runs and 46 RBIs.

It’s another major blow to Atlanta after reigning NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. went down with a season-ending knee injury in May.

Earlier in the day, the Braves put All-Star pitcher Max Fried on the 15-day injured list with forearm neuritis, a nerve inflammation.

Fried (7-5, 3.08 ERA) has made 18 starts this season and has been a critical member of the Braves’ rotation along with Chris Sale and Reynaldo López.

Manager Brian Snitker said Fried initially felt something getting loose before Tuesday’s All-Star Game appearance. Fried pitched the second inning, throwing 10 pitches and allowing one walk.

Fried, who has made the NL All-Star team in two of the last three seasons, missed three months last year with a strained forearm.

Rays’ Pepiot on IL

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Ryan Pepiot was hospitalized for a knee infection and will miss his scheduled start at Toronto on Tuesday.

He was placed on the 15-day injured list.

Pepiot, acquired from the Dodgers in the offseason Tyler Glasnow trade, was admitted to Columbia University Medical Center to receive antibiotics in his right knee.

The 26-year-old right-hander is 6-5 with a 3.92 ERA in 17 starts this year.
