Rangers: The Rangers placed third baseman Josh Jung on the 10-day injured list with neck spasms before Sunday’s series finale against the Red Sox and recalled infielder Jonathan Ornelas from Triple-A Round Rock. Jung batted twice in an exhibition game at home Monday night before exiting because of neck stiffness. He didn’t play in the exhibition finale Tuesday but started each of the first two regular-season games. Ezequiel Duran started at third for the Rangers on Sunday with Ornelas at shortstop. Josh Smith started at third Saturday but suffered a left quad contusion while going after a foul ball in the first inning. He initially stayed in the game, but Duran pinch-hit for him in the first and then took over at third. Manager Bruce Bochy said he hopes Smith will be ready for Monday night’s game against the Reds. Jung, the AL All-Star starter at third base as a rookie in 2023, was hitting .412 with two homers and six RBIs in the first four games last season before his right wrist was fractured when hit by a pitch while he was swinging. He then missed 102 games before returning July 30. That was after he had been out most of spring training with a left calf strain. Ornelas hit .205 in 26 total games for the Rangers during the last two seasons.

Orioles: RHP Tomoyuki Sugano left his major league debut against the Blue Jays on Sunday after four innings because of cramping, the team said. Sugano took the mound to warm up for the bottom of the fifth before manager Brandon Hyde, Orioles trainers and an interpreter gathered around him for a conference. Sugano was seen flexing his right hand before walking off. Making his first start in North America after 276 appearances with Japan’s Yomiuri Giants, Sugano allowed two runs and four hits against the Blue Jays. George Springer drove in both runs for the Blue Jays with a two-out single in the first inning. Sugano walked two and struck out one. He threw 73 pitches, 45 for strikes, and retired five of the final six batters he faced. Sugano signed a one-year, $13-million contract with the Orioles in December. At 35 years and 170 days, Sugano is the oldest Japanese player to make his MLB debut since Ken Takahashi (40 years, 16 days) with the Mets in 2009. RHP Matt Bowman replaced Sugano.

Phillies: Catcher J.T. Realmuto and shortstop Trea Turner were out of the lineup for Sunday’s 5-1 series finale loss to the host Nationals, though manager Rob Thomson said both could be available for the team’s home opener Monday against the Rockies. Realmuto suffered a bruised foot when he fouled a ball off himself Saturday. Turner sat out Saturday with a back spasm. “J.T.’s still sore, but it’s more precaution than anything,” Thomson said. “... Kind of the same thing with Trea. We’re shooting for those guys for tomorrow.” Thomson said Turner received treatment Sunday morning.
