NEW YORK — The New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx picked up right where they left off last season when reaching the WNBA Finals.

Both teams have gone undefeated so far this year with the Lynx improving to 8-0 with a win over Phoenix on Tuesday night in a Commissioner’s Cup — in-season tournament — matchup.

The Liberty and Lynx faced off last season in the in-season tournament final with Minnesota coming away with the victory. New York got revenge, winning the WNBA championship for the first time in franchise history.

With Minnesota 8-0 and New York 7-0 this season, it marks the latest that more than one franchise had been undefeated this long into the season since both the Lynx and Sparks started 2016 winning their first 11 games.

New York has dominated its opponents so far, averaging 91.9 points a game, and winning by nearly 23 points a contest. That includes a 48-point victory over Connecticut, the second-largest margin of victory in WNBA history.

Minnesota has been finding ways to win close contests. Before beating Golden State by 11 on Sunday, the Lynx had won their previous four games by a total of 18 points.

The Lynx and Liberty won’t play in the regular season for a few more months with their four matchups coming in the span of a few weeks — the first of which is on July 30.

Tuesday’s games

Fever 85, Mystics 76: Kelsey Mitchell had 23 points, Lexie Hull scored all 14 of her points in the second half, and short-handed Indiana, playing without Caitlin Clark, beat Washington in Indianapolis to snap a three-game losing streak.

Clark was out with a left quad strain, and veteran guard Sophie Cunningham exited early in Friday’s loss to Connecticut and did not play against the Mystics.

The Fever scored 31 points in the third quarter — after scoring 38 in the entire first half — to take a 69-55 lead. Aari McDonald, making her Indiana debut, made the Fever’s fifth 3-pointer of the third with 2:29 left.

Washington scored the opening 12 points of the fourth quarter to get within 69-67 on layup by Brittney Sykes.

But Indiana scored seven straight points to pull away. Hull made an open layup for a 78-73 lead and she helped force a jump ball at the other end. The Fever won the jump ball and Mitchell completed a three-point play, after a reverse layup, for an eight-point lead at 1:28.

Lynx 88, Mercury 65: Napheesa Collier had 18 points and 11 rebounds, Natisha Hiedeman scored 18 points, and Kayla McBride had 13 points and seven assists for host Minnesota.

The Lynx erased a nine-point deficit with a 49-23 run for a 63-46 lead with 2:41 remaining in the third.

Lexi Held scored 16 points for Phoenix (5-3).

Storm 83, Wings 77: Gabby Williams had 18 points, Nneka Ogwumike scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half, and host Seattle snapped a three-game losing streak.
