The Gophers men’s basketball team cruised to an 82-62 win over North Dakota in its second and final exhibition game on Saturday at Williams Arena.

Minnesota — which won its first tune-up, 80-56 over North Dakota State on Oct. 16 — will open the season against Gardner-Webb at The Barn on Nov. 3.

Similar to the win over the Bison, wing Cade Tyson led all scorers with 26 points against the Fighting Hawks. Tyson shot on 9 of 13 from the field, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range.

That fell just short of what Tyson, a transfer from North Carolina, did versus NDSU: 28 points on 4 of 6 from deep.

Head coach Niko Medved will like the 20 assists on 29 field goals, but his new team did have 20 turnovers, which drew frustrations from him on the sideline Saturday.

Langston Reynolds, a transfer from Northern Colorado, added 17 points and Jaylen Crocker Johnson scored 10.

Starting point guard Chansey Willis Jr., had 12 points, six rebounds and eight assists, including a few no-look passes.

Minnesota’s starting lineup in both games featured Willis and Isaac Asuma and guard with Crocker-Johnson and Tyson and center Robert Vaihola in the front court.

Women’s hockey pounds Providence in rematch

The No. 13 St. Thomas women’s hockey team gained a measure of revenge for Friday’s loss to Providence by defeating the Friars 5-1.

After a scoreless first half of the game, Whitney Horton put the Tommies (6-3) up for good on an unassisted goal at 9:18 of the second period.

Chloe Boreen doubled the host’s lead at 5:52 of the second before Providence (2-5) opened the third period scoring to cut the edge to 2-1.

The Tommies took it away from there, as Rylee Bartz, Ella Boerger and Nora Sauer each scored in the final seven-plus minutes of the contest to turn a close game into a rout.

Goaltender Julia Minotti made 19 saves.

Women’s hockey sweeps Bulldogs, 5-0 on road

The No. 3 Minnesota women’s hockey team remained undefeated on the road this season and completed a series sweep of Minnesota-Duluth with a 3-2 win at Amsoil Arena in Duluth.

Senior forward Abbey Murphy recorded her fifth multi-goal game of the season, including the game-winning tally midway through the third period. With her performance, Murphy moved into sole possession of second place on Minnesota’s all-time goals list, passing Gopher legend Hannah Brandt.

UMD (6-4, 2-4 WCHA) opened the scoring at 7:55 of the second period before the Gophers (9-1, 5-1) leveled the count at 1-1 on a Josefin Bouveng goal three minutes later.

Back-to-back goals by Murphy pushed Minnesota’s edge to 3-1 by midway through the third.

The Bulldogs kept things interesting with a late power-play goal, but the Gophers held on for the one-score win.

Goaltender Hannah Clark made 37 saves.

Men’s hockey swept by Duluth at Mariucci

The Minnesota-Duluth men’s hockey team headed back north with a series sweep of Minnesota by means of a 4-1 win at Mariucci Arena.

Tate Pritchard scored the Gophers’ lone goal of the game at 10:35 of the second period. His goal was sandwiched by two Bulldogs goals on each side as Minnesota goaltender made just 20 saves on 24 shots faced.

UMD improved to 7-1 on the season, while the Gophers fell to 2-5-1.

Hamstring still keeping Jackson out vs. Bears

Lamar Jackson will miss a third consecutive game with a hamstring injury when the Baltimore Ravens host the Chicago Bears.

The Ravens ruled Jackson out, while also saying he was not in fact a full participant in practice the previous day.

Jackson was initially listed as a full participant Friday — and questionable for Sunday’s game. But now the team has downgraded him to out — and said he was actually limited Friday.

The Ravens lost to Houston and the Los Angeles Rams without Jackson, and even an open date last weekend wasn’t enough for them to get the two-time MVP back.

Major leaguers could play in 2028 L.A. Oympics

Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred is increasingly confident big league players will participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

MLB did not allow players on 40-man rosters at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

The league has discussed creating an extended All-Star break to allow participation in the 2028 Games.

An agreement with the players’ association is necessary, and sponsor deals could be impacted. Manfred says logistical issues still need to be worked on.

Participation in 2028 is likely to be a one-off, as the 2032 Olympics are scheduled for Brisbane, Australia.

Schiffrin places fourth in World Cup opener

Mikaela Shiffrin is very much used to winning World Cup races but could hardly be more pleased with finishing fourth in the season opener.

The American star is rebuilding her confidence in giant slalom in the aftermath of her crash last November.

She sustained a puncture wound to the right side of her abdomen and severe damage to her oblique abdominal muscles in a crash at her home GS in Killington last year.
