STILLWATER, Okla. >> Shorthanded once again, the Colorado women’s basketball team put up a good fight against No. 24 Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Two big numbers hurt the Buffaloes, though, in an 82-65 loss at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

“In the end, just too many turnovers and too many fouls,” CU head coach JR Payne said. “I think that pretty much sealed the game.”

CU (17-10, 8-8 Big 12) lost for the fourth time in five games after racking up 23 fouls and 21 turnovers, compared to just 11 of each for Oklahoma State (22-5, 12-4).

The Buffs got point guard Kindyll Wetta (concussion) and forward Lior Garzon (foot) back but still played without guards Frida Formann and Sara-Rose Smith, who are both nursing foot injuries.

Despite being shorthanded, CU rode the hot hand of Jade Masogayo to take a 19-13 lead late in the first quarter. Masogayo, with her right hand taped, scored nine of her 14 points in that initial surge.

With 1:22 to go in the first quarter, though, Masogayo was hit with her second foul and went to the bench the remainder of the half. CU was outscored 33-13 with her on the bench, taking a 14-point deficit into intermission.

CU had one turnover before Masogayo went to the bench and 10 during the last 11 minutes of the half with her out.

“I think (the Cowgirls) dialed up the pressure, and I think we got a little frazzled,” Payne said. “You always go back and watch it and kind of figure out, what could we have done differently? But I thought it was a combination of their pressure and us not being as composed as we needed to be.”

CU briefly pulled within eight points, 51-43, midway through the third quarter, but foul trouble continued.

Masogayo wound up having a solid game with 14 points and five rebounds. CU was plus-5 with her on the court, but she was limited to just 11 minutes as she finished with four fouls.

She didn’t play in the second quarter and only 13 seconds in the fourth quarter.

OSU, led by Stailee Heard’s 24 points, outscored the Buffs by 11 at the free throw line (21-10) and had a 15-point advantage (27-12) in points off of turnovers.

Overall, it was a better performance for CU than in a blowout loss to Baylor on Wednesday in Boulder.

Ayianna Johnson led CU with a career-high-tying 20 points, while Wetta returned to post four points and seven assists.

“Congrats to Oklahoma State; they’re having a great season,” Payne said. “I thought they played really hard and really well. I thought we played really hard too. Putting a couple injured players back in the lineup is a great thing because it gave us a little bit more depth. I thought we played really hard, as well. I don’t think there’s a single possession that I would say we didn’t give tremendous effort.”
