


Aptos High’s boys track and field team took first out of 21 schools competing at the 52nd Avis Kelley Invitational at Gilroy High on Saturday.
Aptos senior Casey MacConnell took first in both the high jump (6 feet) and long jump (21-3.25), as the Mariners had athletes crowned as champion in five events.
Aptos senior Vincent Sandford-Carroll (3,200; 9 minutes, 57.85 seconds), junior Brady Bliesner (1,600; 4:32.34), and sophomore Sam Hansen (800, 1:55.58) also earned first-place finishes.
Watsonville senior Nathaniel Aceves-Aguilar took first in the triple jump (40-10.25).
Scotts Valley junior Aaron Weiss took second in the 800 (1:56.95), and Monte Vista Christian junior Conor Gilliam took third (1:58.07).
Aptos (Damian Suchil, MacConnell, Deric Moren, and Scott Catesi) took third in the 4×100 relay (44.09). Mariners senior Logan Brantley took third in both the shot put (52-5.5) and third in the discus (151-7), and sophomore teammate Bryce Boudreault took third in the pole vault (11-6).
The Mariners finished with 82 points. Watsonville (18) took 11th, Scotts Valley (13) took 13th, and MVC (12) took 14th.
Pacific Grove Rotary Invitational >> Pajaro Valley senior Izaak Ocampo took first in the long jump (21-9.25) and third in the 200 (23.35) at the 55th annual Pacific Grove Rotary Invitational on Saturday.
Santa Cruz senior Eli Fitchen-Young took first in the 800 (1:54.52).
Santa Cruz sophomore Angelo Myer took second in the 100 (11.36), and senior teammate Alan Lee took second in the 1,600 (4:37.19)
Pajaro Valley junior Giovanni Villanueva took second in the 300 hurdles (45.19) and third in the 100 hurdles (18.45).
Pajaro Valley senior Aron Bernabe took second in the shot put (40-9), and senior teammate Luis Torres took third in the discus (119-3).
The Grizzlies (Eduardo Mendoza, Villanueva, Isaias Villasana, and Ocampo) took third in the 4×100 relay (45.99).
Pacific Collegiate sophomore Jude Holmlund took third in the pole vault (11-0).
Girls track and field
Avis Kelley Invitational >> Scotts Valley juniors Ava Decleve and Dylan Turzak, San Lorenzo Valley senior Orea Pollock, and MVC senior Kylie Brunelli earned event wins at the 52nd Avis Kelley Invitational at Gilroy High on Saturday.
Decleve took first in the 400 (58.13), Turzak took first in the 800 (2:27.19), Pollock took first in the high jump (5-0), and Brunelli took first in the 3,200 (11:17.85).
MVC freshman Anna Conca took second in the 1,600 (5:21.72), and Watsonville senior Katelynn Ruiz took third (5:24.16).
Archbishop Mitty senior Evangeline Marheineke, a Santa Cruz resident, took second in the 3,200 (11:41.28), and Aptos junior Maya Schiro took third in 11:43.88).
SLV senior Naomi Seastrom took second in the 300 hurdles (47.54) and third in the 100 hurdles (16.86).
Aptos sophomore Bella Hartnett took third in the 400 (59.09).
Archbishop Mitty (98) won the team title. SLV (34) took fourth, Scotts Valley (24) tied for sixth, MVC (23) took eighth, Aptos (16) tied for 14th, and Watsonville (13) took 16th.
Pacific Grove Rotary Invitational >> Santa Cruz sophomore Joy Roberts took first in both the 100 (12.69) and 200 (25.46) at the 55th annual Pacific Grove Rotary Invitational on Saturday.
Roberts also teamed with Haisley Flanagan, Joy Hilldale, Amelia Palm for the Cardinals in the 4×100 relay win (51.39).
Santa Cruz County runners earned a sweep of the top three spots in the 1,600 with Santa Cruz senior Heidi Green (5:15.15) in first and followed by PCS freshman Iris Paten (5:15.76), and Cardinals freshman Isla Roake (5:16.16).
Pajaro Valley (4:32.50) took third in the 4×400 relay.
Men’s volleyball
UCSC 3, Wisconsin Lutheran 0 >> Evan Erickson had 10 kills, three blocks, and two aces in the Banana Slugs’ 25-15, 25-15, 25-20 sweep at Aurora University in Aurora, Illinois, on Saturday morning.
Noy Fisher had nine kills, five digs, two blocks, two aces, and two digs for UCSC (19-6). Andrew Pak had 24 assists and eight digs.
Brady Pichler had seven kills for the Warriors (8-14).
At Aurora 3, UCSC 1 >> Riley Norman had 14 kills and 10 digs, but the Banana Slugs suffered a 20-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22 loss in Illinois on Saturday afternoon.
AJ Contreras had 13 kills for the Banana Slugs. Kyle Ownbey had eight kills, Nico Espinoza had 12 digs, and Andrew Pak made 33 assists.
Josh McLellan had 20 kills and six digs for the Spartans (21-4).
UCSC (19-7) closes its regular season at California Lutheran (20-6) on April 12 at 4 p.m.
High school baseball
At Aptos 11, Santa Clara 5 >> Isaiah Work had two hits, including a double, three RBI, and scored a run in the Mariners’ nonleague win Saturday.
Freshman Damien Espinoza had two hits with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored for the Mariners (3-6, 1-2). Alec Mendoza had two hits, including a double, two walks, and scored four runs. Finn Cormier tripled and scored twice, and Dom Castillo had two hits, one walk, and scored twice.
Nathaniel Sanchez had a hit and two RBI for the Bruins (9-3).
Aptos hosts Harbor (10-2, 2-1) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
At MVC 7, Pacific Grove 0 >> Evan Vessey had two hits and two RBI in the Mustangs’ nonleague win Saturday.
Carter Wright had two hits, including a double, and scored twice. Jackson Haddad had two walks, three stolen bases, one RBI, and scored twice.
Haddad, the winning pitcher, walked seven batters and struck out six over four hitless, shutout innings. Parker Brown struck out four batters and gave up one hit and two walks over three scoreless innings of relief.
The Breakers dropped to 2-7.
MVC (9-2, 2-0) plays Greenfield (7-2, 0-2) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Palma 14, at Scotts Valley 9 >> Kit Deforest doubled, homered, drove in four runs, and scored a run in the Falcons’ nonleague loss Saturday.
Clayton Pryor and Nick Acton each had two hits and scored twice for the Falcons (5-7, 1-2). Bryce McDonnell also scored twice. Pryor had one RBI, and Acton had a double.
Alan Gonzalez had four hits, including a double and home run, five RBI, and scored a run for the Chieftains (8-2).
Scotts Valley hosts Soquel (11-1, 2-1) on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
High school softball
Saratoga 12, at Santa Cruz 4 >> Ellia Dunton had three hits, including a double, one RBI, and scored twice in the Cardinals’ nonleague loss Saturday.
Poppy Coursey had two hits, and Molly Pisciotta and Tezdyn Medina-Mates each had a hit and run scored for the Cardinals (4-5, 2-0). Amaris Gonzalez had a hit and one RBI against the Falcons (8-1).
