Pep Biel had a goal and two assists to propel Charlotte FC to a 4-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday night.
Charlotte (3-1-1) jumped in front in the 11th minute when Biel scored unassisted. It was his second goal this season after scoring twice in eight starts and nine appearances last year — his first in the league.
Charlotte grabbed a two-goal lead in the 36th minute when Ashley Westwood took a pass from 20-year-old rookie forward Idan Toklomati and scored for the first time this season and for the sixth time in his three seasons in the league.
Charlotte led 3-0 at the half after Brandt Bronico used an assist from Biel in the 40th minute to score for the first time this season. Kerwin Vargas scored in the 52nd minute to make it 4-0.
Charlotte midfielder Andrew Privett was tagged with a red card in the 74th minute. That led to a penalty-kick goal by San Jose’s Cristian “Chicho” Arango. It was Arango’s third goal of the season after coming over from Real Salt Lake. Privett’s red card was for a foul on Preston Judd.
Daniel De Sousa Britto stopped three shots for San Jose (2-3-0) in the club’s first trip to Charlotte.

Hovland part of 3-way tie for Valspar lead >> Viktor Hovland was steady amid a wild of charges and collapses at the Valspar Championship, leaving him in a three-way tie for the lead at Palm Harbor, Fla. with two dozen players still very much in the mix.
Jacob Bridgeman showed plenty of mettle in his first time as the 36-hole leader, falling four shots behind at the turn and rallying for a 1-under 70 to share the lead with Hovland (69) and Nico Echavarria (66).
They were at 7-under 206 with seemingly everyone on their heels. That includes Justin Thomas, who left on Friday hopeful he would make the cut. He shot 30 on the back nine for a 65, his lowest round ever on the Copperhead course at Innisbrook, to finish two behind.
Jordan Spieth was entertaining as ever, twice making birdie from deep in the woods, and along with missing a pair of short par putts, and having to settle for a 67. He still was only four shots behind going into a final round in which 23 players were separated by four shots.
Byeong Hun An was the only player to reach 9 under with a birdie on the 11th hole, only to make five bogeys over the final seven holes for a 72. Even so, he was only three back.

Sister of Pacers’ Turner falls ill >> Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner delivered one of his best overall games of the season. Afterward, his mind was on anything but basketball.
Just hours after his sister, Mya, was taken off the court on a stretcher during pregame warmups, Turner told reporters she was OK, though he understandably didn’t take any other questions.
Turner and Tyrese Haliburton, who had missed the previous three games with a back injury, led the Pacers to a 108-103 victory over the Brooklyn Nets.
Turner scored 22 points, made five 3-pointers, had eight rebounds and three blocks in the Pacers’ fourth straight victory. Haliburton finished with a career best 10th consecutive double-double — 16 points, 12 rebounds. He was two rebounds short of a triple-double.
Knicks’ Brunson out at least another week >> Jalen Brunson is doing some work on the court as he recovers from a sprained right ankle that will keep the New York Knicks All-Star out until at least the final two weeks of the regular season.
The Knicks said that Brunson’s status would be updated again in about a week. The regular season ends April 13.
Clarke out for rest of regular season >> The Memphis Grizzlies likely will be without forward Brandon Clarke for at least the rest of the regular season because of a sprained right knee.
The Grizzlies announced an update Saturday on Clarke, who hurt his knee in Wednesday night’s loss at Portland. The team said Clarke has a high-grade PCL sprain suffered when he fell to the floor in the first quarter of that loss.

Wilson set up Connor McMichael’s opening goal in the first period before scoring his own 7 seconds after the ensuing intermission.
Dylan Strome scoring 52 seconds later made it eight goals combined between the teams in the first 21 minutes of a high-event game largely lacking in defense.
