The Romeo Bulldogs are headed back to the state tournament as a team after taking down Rochester Adams and Troy Athens on Wednesday night in the Team Regional 108 semis and finals.
“It’s been a lot of good practices. We’ve had great practices all year,” said Romeo head coach Jim Cali. “The team came together at the right time. We’ve had guys in and out of the lineup between injuries and sickness and stuff like that, but when it came down to it, we’re going against the No. 7-ranked team in the state and they pulled through. They did great. Adams has a great team, but we’re proud of our guys.”Despite being the semifinal foe, the Highlanders were the stiffer competition of the two Oakland County squads — the Bulldogs defeated Adams 45-26, but they took just a one-point lead into the final three matches of the round.
Jacob Burnham at 285 got a pin at 1:57, 106-pounder Nico Adamo pinned his opponent at 0:32 and, at 113, Justin Rizzo earned his pin in 5:16 to send Romeo to the finals. Bryce Holt, Colton Skurda, OWen Perry, Jake Turley, Landen Fetty and Thomas Jaynes all won matches against Adams.
The Bulldogs jumped all over Athens, who was coming onto the mat cold after their semifinal foe, Fordson, didn’t make the trip. Romeo won the first five matches: Noah Bonett (126, DQ, three points deducted for flagrant conduct), Colton Skurda (132, fall, 2:34), Anthony Zednder (138, TF, 18-1), Owen Perry (144, fall, 0:38) and Sam Thompson (150, fall, 3:45) each earned at least five points to put their squad up 29-0 early.
After Athens took three of the next four, Romeo rebounded with wins from Thomas Jaynes (215, TF, 15-0), Jacob Burnham (285, fall, 0:46), Nico Adamo (106, fall, 1:38), Justin Rizzo (113, MD, 21-8) and Valentino Adamo (120, fall, 1:03) helped put the Red Hawks away.
“We’re going to get ready to go to Kalamazoo,” Cali said. “They’ll have the seeds out this Sunday, so we’ll find out where we’re seeded and go from there.”
The Bulldogs will kick off their state tournament run on Friday, Feb. 21 at the Wings Event Center.
