A teenager walking to school was shot and injured by an armed suspect in a car Tuesday morning in Bassett, authorities said.
A second boy walking with the teen wasn’t injured.
Alejandro Alvarez, superintendent at Bassett Unified School District, said both teens are high school students at the district. But he declined to say how old the boys are and what school they attend.
Bassett Unified has two high schools. Bassett High School at 755 N. Ardilla Ave. and Nueva Vista High, which is a continuation school, at 904 N. Willow Ave.
The shooting happened on Amar Road between Millbury and Puente avenues around 9:45 a.m., sheriff’s Sgt. Brent Del Valle said. He believes the teen who was shot is 17.
The teen was walking with somebody else on Amar Road towards Puente Avenue when a car pulled up and someone in the sedan opened fire, according to Del Valle. The teen was shot in the torso, he said.
Two suspects, described only as a male and a female, were in the car, Del Valle said. The car was last seen heading south on Puente Avenue, he added.
Staff at a local hospital called the sheriff’s Industry station about a gunshot victim about 30 minutes later, Del Valle said. The wounded teen was hospitalized in stable condition, the sgt. said.
“My understanding is he’s going home tomorrow,” Alvarez said.
Bassett Unified sent out texts and emails to notify parents, he said.
The district has security and also asked the sheriff’s department to provide extra security for the next couple of days, according to the superintendent.
“We don’t anticipate any issues but are taking precautions,” Alvarez said.
Both boys are students at Bassett Unified School District.
