Front Range Community College is rolling out the nation’s first Bachelor of Applied Science in integrated building design, giving students the opportunity to put cutting-edge technology to work as they’re trained in design, collaboration, workflow and project management.

The program helps students understand how to effectively design the spaces where Colorado residents live and work. The career-focused pathway, also referred to as “design for the built environment,” is designed to propel people pursuing careers in design, building and construction industries.

The hands-on interdisciplinary degree will train students in architectural design, building science, construction techniques, digital design and visualization, project management and collaboration. According to a news release from the FRCC Media Office, a degree in the pathway can prepare students for careers in architectural drafting and 3D visualization, interior design, building information modeling and project management.

FRCC President Colleen Simpson, EdD shared her comments in the release.

“FRCC is leading the way by pioneering a groundbreaking program that will fuel the workforce pipeline for Colorado’s thriving design, building, and construction sectors,” Simpson said. “This cutting-edge degree program, developed through a collaboration between faculty and industry experts, is set to transform the educational landscape. Our commitment remains steadfast in expanding access to high-quality, affordable bachelor’s degrees, ensuring that our students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to drive design and innovation.”

The program won’t require a trip through the canyon to class either. The new class is fully online, offering students a flexible means of completing the degree. Over the course of two years, students in this program will explore numerous career paths in the architectural design process, learn a ranging spectrum of techniques from the basics of building science to innovative construction techniques, work on a comprehensive interior alteration project and learn to develop presentations that meet industry standards.
