SAN JOSE — A major explosion at a pyrotechnics facility in Yolo County has forced the cancellation of a Fourth of July fireworks display at Lake Cunningham Park in San Jose, but a drone show will take its place, according to the city.

San Jose City Councilmember Domingo Candelas announced the news of the fireworks cancellation in a social media post Wednesday.

“Our fireworks vendor was directly impacted by the warehouse explosion late last night in Yolo County,” Candelas said. “However, we are working to pivot to a drone show.”The fireworks display will be replaced by the city’s first-ever drone show, according to a news release from the city.

“The show must go on,” said Mayor Matt Mahan in a statement Thursday. “I want to thank Councilmember Candelas and city staff for finding a solution in less than 24 hours that will ensure families in San Jose can celebrate American independence and the innovation that keeps us on the cutting edge with a drone show at Lake Cunningham.”

The celebration will also include food vendors and live music, city officials said. The drone show is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m.

Rep. Jimmy Panetta helped the city of San Jose secure the necessary expedited clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration to host a drone show, according to his office. The city already had clearance to set off fireworks but needed to get amended approval to include a drone show because of the show’s proximity to Reid-Hillview Airport.

The pyrotechnics facility, located at County Road 23 and County Road 86A in Esparto, exploded around 6 p.m. Tuesday and touched off a 78-acre fire. Seven people remain unaccounted for, Cal Fire, the Esparto Fire Protection District and the Yolo County Office of Emergency Services said in a joint news release Wednesday.

“First responders and investigators are working diligently with the property owner to determine the whereabouts of those individuals,” authorities said.

Evacuation orders remained in place around the property as crews continue to assess the site for hazards.

Cal Fire said it believes the property is owned by an active pyrotechnic license holder.

“As part of our investigation, we will be working to determine that everything happening at the facility was within license requirements,” authorities said. “This type of incident is very rare, as facilities like this are required to not only follow our stringent California pyrotechnic requirements, but also federal explosive storage requirements.”

The celebration at Lake Cunningham Park will begin at 3 p.m. today, Candelas said.

There is no on-site event parking, he added, and attendees are encouraged to park at Eastridge Mall and take the free shuttles from the JCPenney lot to the park.

Road closures along the perimeter of the park will take place as scheduled for the day, Candelas said.

Most other Bay Area firework displays are set to proceed today. The fireworks show hosted by the city of Santa Clara, Great America and Mission College will continue as planned, as it uses a different firework supplier, said Janine De la Vega, public information officer for the city of Santa Clara. The Shoreline Amphitheater fireworks show is also set to proceed, said Lenka Wright, chief communications officer for the city of Mountain View.

The cancellation of the Lake Cunningham Park fireworks display follows the city’s decision last month to call off a similar show at Almaden Lake Park. Officials said that event had outgrown the park as a venue. Last year, a fire broke out during the show.

“The tragedy in Yolo County has affected multiple fireworks displays across the state,” Candelas said in a news release. “While we have to cancel the fireworks, the celebration is still on. … Our hope is to still unite our community in celebration but also deter the use of illegal fireworks in our neighborhoods.”
