Player dies after collapsing at game

William Jewell College junior running back Micah Jo Barnett died after experiencing a medical emergency on the sideline — and shortly after scoring a touchdown — during the Missouri-based Division II school’s season opener against Fort Lewis College on Saturday, police and school officials said.

Police in Liberty, Missouri, issued a statement that said emergency officials on hand at the game attended to a player about 20 minutes after kickoff. The player was transported by ambulance to a hospital, police said.

The player was pronounced dead at the hospital and was identified by the school as Barnett. No other details were released.

The college posted a message on its football website with the headline: “Jewell Mourns Loss of Football Student-Athlete Micah Jo Barnett.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Micah Jo’s family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss,” the message read.

Ohtani’s return to mound postponed

Shohei Ohtani will not pitch Sunday against Detroit after experiencing knee discomfort during Friday’s bullpen session.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before Saturday’s 2-1 loss that Ohtani’s knee still isn’t pain free, and he’s also having minor issues with the biceps muscle that troubled him earlier in the inning.

After the game, Roberts said Ohtani’s next pitching outing is up in the air. The two-way star hasn’t pitched since July 3, and would have only pitched an inning or two on Sunday.

Ohtani has been able to hit through the problems and the addition of Tarik Skubal has made it easier to win without him in the rotation.

Tottenham comes up short once again

Tottenham’s remarkable $400 million summer spending spree isn’t translating to any on-field success so far in the Premier League.

Two games. Zero points.

Big-spending Spurs are still searching for their first goal of the campaign after being beaten 2-0 at home by Newcastle on Saturday, a week after being ripped apart in a 3-0 loss at Brentford.

Five of Tottenham’s slew of new signings started the game — including Sandro Tonali, whose every touch was booed by the visiting fans after his $133 million departure from Newcastle.

Spurs — coming off back-to-back 17th-place finishes in the Premier League — are one of three teams to have lost both of their games so far and it looks like it will take time for so many new players to gel. Not since the 1974-75 season has Tottenham lost its two opening matches of a league campaign without scoring.

Eslewhere, for the second straight weekend Liverpool needed a late equalizer to rescue a point in the Premier League as Víctor Muñoz’s 82nd-minute strike earned a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest at Anfield.

Hrgovic secures heavyweight title

Filip Hrgovic absorbed blow after blow before stopping Moses Itauma in the ninth round to hand the 21-year-old British boxer his first loss and take the vacant IBF heavyweight world title on Saturday in London.

Itauma’s corner threw in the towel as he was being pummelled against the ropes, making the 34-year-old Hrgovic the first Croatian heavyweight champion.

Itauma had never needed to go past the sixth round in his first 14 professional bouts and tired visibly after taking command of the early rounds, with Hrgovic absorbing a barrage of hits even after being knocked down in the second round.
