Rockies announce 23 non-roster invitations

The Rockies announced 23 players received a non-roster invite to 2025 spring training, a mix of up-and-coming prospects as well as players who have seen major league service time.

Nine of the non-roster invitees join Colorado from different organizations, and eight of those players already made their MLB debut. The only one who hasn’t is Jefry Yan, who spent last season with the Saitama Seibu Lions in Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan.

Top prospects among the invitees include right-hander Chase Dollander, left-handers Carson Palmquist and Sean Sullivan, infielders Julio Carreras, Kyle Karros and Ryan Ritter, and outfielders Benny Montgomery and Sterlin Thompson.

No deal. Young collector refuses Pirates’ trade offer for rare Paul Skenes card

The young collector who scored a one-of-a-kind baseball card featuring National League Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes has turned down a trade offer from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Topps said Friday that the 11-year-old from the Los Angeles area had declined the deal and instead was going to put the card — which features Skenes’ autograph and a patch from a game-worn jersey — up for auction.

The Pirates had put together a package that included 30 years’ worth of season tickets behind home plate at PNC Park.

Riviera tournament moving to Torrey Pines because of Los Angeles wildfires

The PGA Tour is relocating the Genesis Invitational out of wildfire-ravaged Los Angeles, announcing Friday it will be held Feb. 13-16 on the South course at Torrey Pines in San Diego with an emphasis on relief initiatives for victims of the fires.

That gives Torrey Pines two tournaments in a span of four weeks. The tour said the $20 million signature event hosted by Tiger Woods would return to Riviera Country Club next year.

Riviera was not damaged, but it is located in the Pacific Palisades community that has been devasted by fires that have killed 28 people and destroyed more than 14,000 structures in Greater Los Angeles since Jan. 7.

Vegas, baby! Sin City to host the 2027 CFP national championship

LAS VEGAS >> Las Vegas will host the 2027 College Football Playoff national championship game.

The CFP made the announcement Friday, saying the title game will be played Monday, Jan. 25, 2027, at Allegiant Stadium.

Chock and Bates dance their way into a big lead at U.S. championships

WICHITA, Kan.>> Two-time defending world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates danced their way through three decades of popular American music on Friday night, and right into a big lead after the rhythm dance at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Chock and Bates scored 92.16 points, nearly 10 more than second-place Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko.

Odermatt gets first win in Kitzbuehel in super-G

KITZBUEHEL, Austria >> Swiss star Marco Odermatt finally added Kitzbuehel to his list of World Cup ski victories on Friday, taking an eventful super-G at the iconic Austrian resort where some racers crashed badly.

It was the 44th career win for the skier who has been dominating World Cup racing for the past three seasons.
