City expanding cattle grazing for wildfire mitigation
Boulder will further lean on bovine to trim down the risk of fires in grasslands.
The city announced in a news release that it’s expanding cow grazing in June to the north Boulder area in an effort to trim down grass that could be at risk of ignition in a wildfire.
Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks Department will let the livestock chow down on grass near Wonderland Lake and west of the Wonderland Lake trail in mid-June for up to two weeks. Additional grazing is planned near the Dakota Ridge and North Briar neighborhoods In October for about two weeks, the release said. Currently, the city has allowed grazing on the Shanahan Ridge area to the south as a way to reduce weeds and trim grass.
“The location, timing, and duration of grazing have been strategically planned to maximize wildfire risk reduction while minimizing impacts to sensitive natural areas,” the release said.
A community meeting is slated from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Open Space and Mountain Parks Hub, 2520 55th St., to discuss the city’s efforts to expand livestock grazing.
DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
FAA ground delay impacts hundreds of flights at DIA
More than 200 flights headed in and out of Denver International Airport were delayed and one was canceled Thursday after the Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground delay.
The FAA issued the DIA ground delay at 8 a.m. for “low ceilings,” which refers to the lowest level of cloud cover.
Flights headed into DIA were being delayed an average of 36 minutes during the hour and a half the ground delay was active, according to FAA officials. Those delays caused other flights headed out of DIA to leave the gate late.
