MOSS LANDING >> Joshua Holtzclaw, 29, was arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter after having a reported physical altercation at Moss Landing Harbor that is believed to have led to the death of 26-year-old Trenten Black of Aptos.

Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputies and California State Parks Officers were called to the Moss Landing Harbor shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday after reports of a collision between two boats. Witnesses reported seeing a physical altercation after one of the boat operators climbed onto the other boat after the crash.

One of the men fell into the water as the other assaulted him with a stick, according to a news release. Witnesses saw Holtzclaw exit the water with his boat and Black was later identified as the man who had fallen in the water.

The people who witnessed the altercation said they had not seen Black exit the water. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team was assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard and a SONAR device to locate Black’s body just after 1 p.m. A forensic examination is needed to determine Black’s cause of death.

Deputies detained Holtzclaw, who was later questioned by detectives. Interviews were also conducted with multiple witnesses who had no relationship to either man.

The interviews reported that Black climbed onto Holtzclaw’s boat after the vessels, piloted by the men, collided. A physical altercation ensued and appeared to result in Black falling into the water. After Holtzclaw left the scene, a passing vessel attempted to rescue Black with a life preserver but was unsuccessful.

Holtzclaw was booked into the Monterey County Jail for one count of voluntary manslaughter and his bail is set at $200,000.

The Sheriff’s Office is requesting anyone with information related to the case to contact Detective Josue Ramirez at (831) 253-6068. Information can also be provided anonymously.
