Angels star Mike Trout will miss Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium because of back spasms that cost him the final four games before the All-Star break.

Trout officially pulled out of the All-Star Game on Sunday, a day after he was scratched from the Angels’ final game before the break. Trout had said on Friday night that he believed he’d be able to play on Saturday, and he was in the lineup.

The three-time American League MVP was hitting in the cage about 20 minutes before the game and he said it still didn’t feel right, so he didn’t play.

“It’s a little concerning, but I’m staying positive,” Trout said on Saturday night. “It’s just frustrating. I don’t know what really sparked it. I’ve taken a lot of swings over the past three weeks. I can’t really pinpoint it. It is what it is.”

Trout was replaced on the AL roster by Seattle Mariners first baseman Ty France, a South Hills High graduate.

A 10-time All-Star and twice the MVP of the game, Trout has now been unable to play three times.

He was out with a sprained thumb in 2017 and a strained calf in 2021. Trout said he still planned to attend the All-Star Game events.

Shohei Ohtani will now be the Angels’ only representative in the All-Star Game. Ohtani was selected as the starting DH and also one of the starting pitchers. He is one of the leading candidates to be the starting pitcher, but that won’t be announced until this morning.
