A new “infant room” is offering parents the option of free childcare in Woodland and expanding services provided by the YMCA.

About 45 people representing the city, Chamber of Commerce and county government attended the room’s unveiling at the Yolo County YMCA’s facility, 1300 College St. The event was promoted as a ribbon-cutting ceremony by the Chamber.

The expanded service, however, is more than just a “room.” It is, in fact, a multi-room childcare facility with space for infants and toddlers.

Tiffany Davidson, youth development executive director for the YMCA, who is overseeing the center, noted that since 1885, the YMCA has “served thousands and thousands of children and families.

The YMCA has a long history in Woodland and Yolo County. It operates not only the College Street facility but, since 1959, has been in charge of Nelson’s Grove, a 10-acre site north of Woodland off Hwy. 113.

It has also received grants over the years for a variety of childcare programs aimed at youngsters and teens. But this latest addition will expand services for more families.“Currently, there’s a high need for subsidized child care in Yolo County, especially infant care, and the YMCA is here to help meet that need,” she told the assembly in an outdoor children’s play area.

She said the YMCA was able to secure state funding as well as a “generous donation” from the Yocha Dehe Wintun Community Fund to “provide low- to no-cost childcare for the community.

“Our program will ensure that children are equipped with skills and confidence that they need for a lifetime of learning, focused on each child’s unique needs,” she said before launching a tour of the infant care area. “The Y takes a wholistic approach to early childhood education, recognizing that supporting the entire household is essential for success. Our team of dedicated teachers, parents, and leadership collaborate to ensure every child receives the individualized care and support they deserve.”

Furnishings for the facility were also purchased using the Yocha Dehe Community Fund. Among the furnishings showcased are cribs, several colorfully decorated playrooms, and other materials to facilitate play and learning.

Sharna Braucks, CEO and president for YMCA of Superior California, the umbrella organization for the Woodland YMCA, called the center a “significant milestone for this community.”

“We have always been more than a gym or a place for recreation,” she explained. “We’re a social service agency with a rich history . . . We’re dedicated to nurturing the potential of every child, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility.”

Braucks said YMCA programs are designed to be “accessible and inclusive and give people a chance to thrive.”

“The YMCA’s work has always been more than programs. It’s about empowering people about creating a community where diversity is celebrated and opportunities are made accessible for all,” she continued. “Today, we reaffirm that commitment by living up to everyone no matter their story,”

“Our new childcare center is a testament to supporting families and children,” she summarized. “Here we will provide a safe, nurturing environment where children can grow, learn and develop the skills they need to be successful in life. This center represents our belief in the potential of every child and family.

“As we cut the ribbon today, we do so with a sense of pride and optimism for the future,” she noted. “This center represents a new chapter in our ongoing mission to make a positive impact on the lives of individuals and families in the community.”
