Bruins sign veteran forward Tyler Johnson to tryout agreement
The Bruins have an opening at second line right wing and it would be helpful if one of their young players would seize that opportunity.
But, regardless of that hope, the B’s invested in a veteran insurance policy on Saturday.
The B’s signed 34-year-old right-shot forward Tyler Johnson to a professional tryout agreement (PTO).
While he has spent the last three years with a rebuilding Chicago Blackhawk team, Johnson was very much a part of the Tampa Bay Lightning’s surge to become one of the NHL’s elite teams in the last decade, culminating with Stanley Cups in the 2020 and 2021.
At 5-foot-8, 185 pounds, Johnson would be a departure from the B’s recent inclination toward size on the roster, though his undersized frame didn’t stop Johnson from raising the Cup twice.
Johnson topped 40 points four times with the Lightning. His best year came in 2014-15 when he had 29-43-72 totals. He also scored 29 goals in 2018-19 when the 62-16—0-4 Bolts sprinted to the Presidents’ Trophy only to be bounced in the first round.
In Chicago last season, Johnson had 17-14-31 totals.

49ers WR Ricky Pearsall shot in attempted robbery in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO >> 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot in the chest Saturday during an attempted robbery in central San Francisco, officials said, and he was reported to be in serious but stable condition.
Mayor London Breed said in a post on the social platform X that Pearsall was shot in Union Square, which is a downtown shopping and theater district home to a popular public square of the same name.
“My thoughts are with Ricky and his family at this time,” Breed said.
San Francisco police said in a statement that Pearsall was injured while being robbed in the area of Geary Street and Grant Avenue, and so was the suspect. Both were taken to the hospital, the statement said. Police did not return calls seeking further information but said the suspect was in custody.
“This kind of violence has no place in our city and will never be tolerated,” police chief William Scott said on X.
The 49ers issued a statement saying Pearsall was hit by a bullet in the chest and gave his condition as serious but stable.
Scottie Scheffler closes in on $25 million FedEx Cup prize with late burst of birdies
ATLANTA >> The most PGA Tour victories in 15 years. A Masters green jacket and an Olympic gold medal. And now Scottie Scheffler is one round away from capping off this astonishing season with a FedEx Cup title and its $25 million prize.
Scheffler had four birdies over his last five holes Saturday for a 5-under 66 to extend his lead to five shots over Collin Morikawa in the Tour Championship at East Lake.
He also knows the work is not done.
Two years ago, Scheffler finished the third round of a rain-delayed Tour Championship on Sunday morning by building a six-shot lead. He fell apart that afternoon with a 73, and watched Rory McIlroy race past him to capture the PGA Tour’s big prize.
The task for Scheffler is simple.
“Keep doing what I’ve been doing, staying in the moment, staying patient out there,” Scheffler said. I’ve bogeyed the first hole two of the last three days, and both times when I bogeyed the first hole I didn’t make any bogeys after that. So that’s kind of good momentum for me.”
