UC Santa Cruz to host Harvest Festival

The 2024 Harvest Festival will feature live music, an apple pie bake-off, kids’ activities, pumpkins for sale, delicious food, and more 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 19, at the UCSC Farm, Farm Road, Santa Cruz.

Admission is $5, with free admission for kids under 12, UCSC, Hartnell College, and Cabrillo College students with a student ID, Semillas program families, and Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden members. Go to calendar.ucsc.edu/event/harvest-festival to preregister.

Bicycling, car pooling, ridesharing and public transportation are encouraged as parking is limited. If you drive to the event, plan to park in UCSC Lot No. 104 (East Remote parking lot) and walk or take a complimentary shuttle to the farm. There will be directional signage to help you get to the correct parking lot and farm entrances.

Bring a reusable water bottle to save plastic and stay hydrated. Pets are not allowed on the UC Santa Cruz campus (with the exception of service animals).

Writers of Color event coming to MAH

Join Writers of Color for a free evening of poetry and music at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History, 705 Front St., Santa Cruz, 6-9 p.m. Thursday.

The event features Farnaz Fatemi, the Santa Cruz County poet laureate, and the corridos of Bob Gómez, the Watsonville poet laureate. Writers of Color-Santa Cruz County members will also be on hand to share their stories. Go to santacruzmah.org for information and to sign up.

City to host Domestic Violence Awareness art exhibit

The city of Santa Cruz’s Commission for the Prevention of Violence Against Women in collaboration with Monarch Services will host the Domestic Violence Awareness Month Art Exhibition and Reception from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at The Old Wrigley Building, 2857 Mission Street, Santa Cruz.

The event will showcase the artistic talent of youth and adults in the community, featuring submissions that express the resilience, strength, and hope of survivors of domestic violence. The art pieces include featured submissions from survivors in the community, participants in Monarch Services programming, students from Soquel High School and the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, and supportive community members.

Attendees will enjoy an array of youth and adult art submissions, a guest speaker, and complimentary hors d’oeuvres and beverages. The exhibition aims to create a space for reflection, support, and solidarity with those impacted by domestic violence.

Local History Research Roundtable

Local history research group, Researchers Anonymous, will hold an online roundtable discussion at 10 a.m., Saturday. Participants will have the opportunity to share their current local history projects, provide feedback, and help one another with their work. The public is invited to attend. Bike group to host yearly ‘Wheels in Motion’

Bike Santa Cruz County will be hosting its “Wheels In Motion, An Annual Celebration” at Woodhouse Blending and Brewing from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 17 to commemorate the growth of safe infrastructure for travel, bicycle supporters and awareness campaigns. The event will offer food, beverages, raffles, and live music by Vintage Point, as well as the acclaimed Wheelie Awards, to acknowledge the outstanding contributions to promoting safety and raising awareness of cycling in Santa Cruz County.

The public is encouraged to submit nominations in the following categories: advocacy, community building, education, infrastructure, and a business champion. Submissions are requested by Oct. 22.

Tickets are $50 to $60 for adults, and $20 for youth. Children 6 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased through the Bike Santa Cruz County website at www.bikesantacruzcounty.org.

Free ‘Oktober Feast’ for the community

The St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, located at 2500 Soquel Ave., will hold a Polka Mass worship service and a free “Oktober Feast” potluck open to the public in honor of Reformation Day at 10 a.m. Oct. 27.

The event will feature a worship service with communion, a celebratory luncheon and the planting of an apple tree. Everyone is welcomed.
