BROOMFIELD >> Not even a miserable April windchill could cool down Fairview’s girls soccer team on Thursday night.
Nor could a penalty kick chance that would have tied things in the final minutes for Broomfield.
Winning a fourth straight game since losing to rival Boulder on March 20, the Knights held on to beat Broomfield, 2-1, after the Eagles’ potential equalizer in the 76th minute rang the crossbar at Elizabeth Kennedy Stadium.
With the weather going from cold and windy at the start of the evening, to just plain freezing and wet as the match progressed, the Knights (7-2, 1-0 5A Granite Peaks League) looked as if they’d be able to find cover soon enough with a late 2-0 lead. But a last-ditch rally from Broomfield (5-4-2, 0-1) made the final minutes for Fairview feel almost as long as its winless streak against the Eagles — which dated back more than a decade (0-10-1).
Kohyn Pottorff cut into the deficit in the 69th, Broomfield’s first response to the Knights’ earlier goals from Lucy Ochs and Anna Hrywnak. The Eagles then had a chance to even things up after drawing a foul in the box with just over four minutes remaining.
“It was one of those things where your heart is beating so fast, your breath is getting a little short,” said Ochs, who scored her 10th goal of the season, and sixth during the team’s current win streak, on a PK of her own in the 19th minute. “But I had full confidence in our keeper (Adeline Costello) and when it hit the crossbar, it was just go, go to that ball.”
Fairview cleared after the miss and eventually held on to beat Broomfield for the first time since before 2015, the latest records go back on MaxPreps. The Knights’ coach, Steve Griggs, who is in his seventh season in charge and was an assistant on the program in the two seasons prior, said his team talked about breaking “the curse” coming into the night.
And, by a few inches, it did.
Ochs gave the Knights an early lead as her PK midway through the opening half flew past the outstretched hands of Broomfield keeper Madison Foulke, who guessed the right way to jump but couldn’t get her hands on the chance to deny it. Then minutes after the break, in the 44th, Hrywnak added to the lead, scoring for the first time this season. Her shot went from the corner of the box into the far side of the net.
The strong start was a continuation of the Knights’ recent stellar play. Since their 1-0 loss to the Panthers on March 20, they started the month by beating Mead, Skyline and Niwot by a combined 13-1.
“That loss (to the Panthers) has been driving us. That’s a game we should not have lost,” Ochs said. “Every single game now is an opportunity to show we’re better than that.”
Broomfield, which had also been red-hot, played without star sophomore and goals leader Marin Kotschau, who scored the winner over then-No. 1 Boulder a week ago before having two more in a lopsided victory over Rocky Mountain on Saturday.
Kotschau is the sister of former Daily Camera girls soccer player of the year, Reagan Kotschau, who is transferring from Washington State to Colorado for next season. Marin was called up to play with the USA women’s under-age 16 team in two friendlies in Spain this week. Two weeks before it, Reagan got the chance to play with the Americans’ U20 team.
“It’s an incredible opportunity and we’re all so thrilled for her,” Broomfield coach Jim Davidson said. “That family has had quite a month.”
Davidson was far less enthusiastic about his team’s performance without Kotschau on Thursday, saying he felt his team “didn’t approach the game real well tonight.”
Despite it, the Eagles still had a chance to even things up after senior Cianna Sexton drew a foul in the box in the final minutes. Their ensuing PK sailed over the hands of GK Costello before plunking the bar.
Fairview, which came into the night ranked 18th in 5A, is at No. 4 Ralston Valley on Saturday. Broomfield, which was 11th, will continue league play at No. 21 Horizon on Tuesday.
