Alabama and Mississippi tumbled out of the top 10 of The Associated Press Top 25 poll Sunday and Miami and SMU moved in following a chaotic weekend in the SEC and across college football in general.
Oregon is No. 1 for the sixth straight week and Ohio State, Texas and Penn State held their places behind the Ducks, who are the last unbeaten team.
The shuffling begins at No. 5, where Notre Dame returned for the first time since Week 2 after beating Army for its ninth straight win.
No. 6 Georgia moved up two spots, No. 7 Tennessee and No. 8 Miami each got a three-rung promotion and No. 9 SMU jumped four places for its first top-10 ranking since 1985. SMU has clinched a spot in the ACC title game and would play Miami, if the Hurricanes win at Syracuse this week, or No. 12 Clemson.
Indiana dropped from No. 5 to No. 10 following its first loss, a 38-15 defeat at Ohio State. The Buckeyes would play Oregon in the Big Ten championship game if they beat Michigan this Saturday for the first time in four years.
The SEC’s hopes for landing four spots in the College Football Playoff took a hit with two of their teams losing as double-digit favorites. Texas, Georgia and Tennessee are the only SEC teams with fewer than three losses after Alabama lost 24-3 at Oklahoma and Mississippi lost 24-17 at Florida.
Oregon, which was idle, was the consensus No. 1 team for the fourth straight week. The Ducks will be unbeaten in the regular season for the first time since 2010 if they beat Washington at home Saturday.
No. 11 Boise State’s ranking is its highest since it was No. 8 in the final poll of the 2011 season. Arizona State’s ranking is its highest since it was No. 12 in the final poll of the 2014 season.
Fans storm field early as Oklahoma stuns Alabama >> Oklahoma’s fans literally couldn’t wait to celebrate their team’s victory over Alabama.
An overzealous crimson and cream-clad mob stormed the field with 28 seconds remaining in Norman, Okla.
After an announcement that the game was not over, the field was cleared. The Sooners took a knee to run out the clock in their stunning 24-3 win over the seventh-ranked Crimson Tide on Saturday night. After that, thousands of Oklahoma fans returned to the field and partied for more than 10 minutes as songs such as “Jump Around” by House of Pain and “FE!N” by Travis Scott played.
True freshman Xavier Robinson ran for career highs of 107 yards and two touchdowns as Oklahoma became bowl eligible and took coach Brent Venables off the hot seat.
Auburn wins four-OT thriller >> Auburn fans finally had a big win to celebrate. Texas A&M, and perhaps the SEC, not so much.
Payton Thorne hit KeAndre Lambert-Smith for a two-point play in the fourth overtime to lift the Tigers to a 43-41 victory over visiting Texas A&M, capping a brutal day for SEC playoff contenders.
The Tigers (5-6, 2-5 SEC) became the day’s latest unranked league team to play spoiler.
Notre Dame hands Army its FIRst loss >> Notre Dame’s tribute game to its “Four Horsemen” turned into a pretty good one-man show by Jeremiyah Love.
Love scored three touchdowns, tying a school record with his 11th straight game with a rushing TD, and the No. 6 Fighting Irish ended No. 18 Army’s 13-game winning streak with a 49-14 victory at Yankee Stadium in New York.
The sophomore had TD runs of 68 and 14 yards, finishing with 130 yards on seven carries, and leaped over a defender at the goal line to finish a 6-yard scoring pass from Riley Leonard.
Leonard threw for two TDs and Jadarian Price ran for two scores for the Irish (10-1), who won their ninth straight to improve their College Football Playoff chances. Notre Dame was No. 6 in those rankings this week and looks every bit like a national title contender, allowing 14 or fewer points in six straight games.
“Everybody on our offense is a dog,” Love said. “Coach Freeman calls us ‘savages’ and that’s really what we are. We’re just continuing to grow every single week and get better.”
