Heavy equipment began arrive Tuesday at the Bidwell Mansion to remove the debris from outside of the home of Chico’s founder, which was destroyed by an arson fire in December. California State Parks Northern Buttes District Superintendent Matt Teague said the removal process would take about three weeks. He said the work has to follow a detailed plan due to the existence of hazardous materials in the debris. Materials to be removed consist largely of the balcony over the mansion porches, and scaffolding that had been erected for restoration work that was underway at the time of the fire. The exterior wreckage has to be removed before the mansion can be entered for further evaluation.
